so here's the thing I suck at spelling and my son is having a hard time with it, he throws a fit when we go over his spelling lessons, when I tell him he needs to study his list and when I give him a "test" and tell him he has to write his missed words X amount of times....
is there any way to make this easier at all??
he just turned 8, the list he is given by the program is 25 words and I let him study on his own for as long as h likes he can tell me he is ready for the test when he feels he is ready, his BIG test is on friday or saturday depending on how the week is going
Quoting banana-bear:
How old is he? How many spelling words does he have? How long before a test does he have to study the words?

My son hates spelling too. He is almost 7 and does 10 words a week that are pre-set in his spelling curriculum. (he is almost done with the current book and about to move to the second one which I believe has 10 words per week too). I try to mix things up and make it more interesting the best I can with different spelling activities, and he has a test every week too. It is his least favorite subject (next to reading) but mixing up the activities and less words makes it more bearable.
What type of learner is he, visual, auditory or kinesthetic? Sometimes using activities related to his learning style will make it easier for him.
Maybe he needs something to make it more fun once in a while. I wrote this article on making spelling more fun. I hope it helps you.

25 words per week seems like a lot, but I don't know your son like you do. If he's struggling, try breaking it into smaller, more manageable groups and quiz on them. Then do a test of them all once you feel he's got them down. Retaining the information is more important than getting it done "on time".

i think there is a website called spelling city. i use that with my daughter and you can make your own word list and they play games with those words...i think you can even "test" on there... we haven't used it in a while. my mother in law one time suggeted letter her write words in sand (a box filled with sand for in the house) or putting shaving cream or whipped cream on the table and spelling the words with her finger. ... just things to make it more fun and interesting. we're letting our 2 year old do that now to learn to write his letters and our 7 yr old is quite jealous lol
I've heard nothing but good things about All About Spelling

It isn't what we use, but I've read in the forums from different Moms that if their child is having problems with spelling, they changed to AAS and it really helped. I just put a link to Rainbow Resource Center as I purchase all of my things over there. Good luck.
my daughter didn't like spelling either so i made it a game instead of the classical method. She writes each word three times the first day, then the 2nd day i put them in a word search and the third day a crossword puzzle.
My kids like http://www.spellingcity.com/ it's fun for them and free to use and will give them the test and grade it too if you like. There is a pay version that will even keep track of his grades and progress. The best part is that you can put in your own lists to use. My 8 yo gets only 10 words and the repetitive writing I found doesn't help so we play games instead. Good luck!
