Starting my 3 yr old off right!

My name is Sarah and I'm starting my son in school in Aug, don't know what day I'm supposed to actually begin because I've never done this before. I was never a straight A student in school myself at all, but my husband and I discussed homeschooling our son when I was still pregnant. So, I have been criticized by a lot of people over the last 3 and a half yrs. My mom has a friend that is a teacher and she is totally against it and several others that I've come acrossed that keep telling me that I should never have thought about it and it's the worst idea in the world. However, I have stood my ground and  said it's my kid and I'll teach him the best way I can. I am a stay home mom and I spend all of my time with Luke and he's already a super smart boy for 3 yrs. I know I'm making a great decision, I just need more support from people who already do it and know what they're doing so that I can understand more. I've been looking into Home School Heartbeat but don't know for sure yet, we're looking for bible based. Any suggestions?

Okay I am going to be different the the others. I don't care for Abeka it's to much book work to me, especially for young kids. However a lot of homeschoolers do like it, just what ever works for you kid. I wanted to share a couple of links with you some just because they helped me get started and the one is a homeschool curriculum review site. http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/weblinks/tips.htm

Play, play, play!  That is the best way for a 3 year old to learn.  playing and reading together are the best possible things you can do.  I would figure out what you would like to go over then just make it into a game.  I created many of my own games for children.  Children's museums are great for preschoolers.  Use them often.  Math for this age group should be done by using objects to count and add.  I used legos when my boys were younger for colors, patterns, counting, and math.  They had so much fun.  I highly recommend you read Einstein never used flash cards.  It has all the research talking about how kids learn especially during the preschool years.  Good luck and remember to have fun.

Check out sonlight.com. I am beginning in September but borrowed the p4/5 curric from a friend who has used sonlight for all 3 of her boys the oldest who is 15. It's expensive but totally worth it!

Don't worry...you don't have to have been an A student to homeschool.  You don't need a degree in anything to homeschool.  You just need the desire to do it and the willingness to learn.

Reading aloud books and doing hands on activities are great for 3 year olds.  There are some recommended books for preschoolers here

My oldest dd started reading at age 3 1/2, but that's because she was ready and eager.  Have fun exploring and learning together and don't be too concerned about book work yet.  That will come.

Many blessings,
Susan
