Phonics

Hi!  I know the phonic question has been asked many times but I really need some help here.  I'm looking for a program that will help teach phonics that will lead to my son reading.  He is a stubborn learner and he would not do good trying to remember all the rules that some phonic programs have.  I'm looking for something that just teaches the sounds of the letters without all the rules. (Such as B sounds like this B as in boy).  I went to homeschoolreviews.com and I'm still have a hard time.

I hope this makes sense.  Any help would be great!  Thanks!!

1 mom liked this

I subscribed to the more.starfall.com it's only $35 for a whole year,  my 3 and 5 year old daughters LOVE it. I also bought all the apps for starfall education for my iphone for them to play when we're on the go. They've both learned a lot, and are sounding words out after about a week using it. I think it's AMAZING.

I was going to suggest Starfall but I see pp did that already :)  My 3 and 4 yo love it!  My 4 yo can sound most words out now and knows a lot of words by sight, my 3 yo knows all of his letters now and we're working on the phonetics now.

We did Bob books. My son had no desire to learn the phonics sounds until he saw exactly how they were used to read words. He was reading the next week!

We use Explode the Code, Click-N-Read, and The Phonics Game. DD#3 has played with HOP, with some success, but ETC is by far my favorite. We've added in All About Spelling this year (2nd grade), we'll see how that works.

I feel that teaching the rules is very important. There are several letters that have more than one sound. Without learning the rules you wouldn't know which sound to use. For instance does C say /K/ or /S/. Because I feel it is so important to learn the rules I use Saxon Phonics. My oldest dd is dyslexic so learning to read has been a struggle for her. She spent K and 1st in public school and didn't learn much as far as reading goes. Then we homeschooled last year using the McGuffey readers. My youngest dd learned quite a bit but my oldest still didn't pick it up. This year with us using Saxon my oldest dd is finally learning to read more than 3 or 4 letter words. It reviews previously learned material everyday to help them retain the information.

All About Spelling ROCK!S ... PP is right. several letters make more than one sound and the rule really help hem figure out which sound when. I can't praise it enough.

We actually started teaching DD with flash cards and Jumpstart games - We did Jumpstart Baby, toddler and preschoo land she had a good knowledge but wasn't blending them together. I was given Leap Frog letter factory and she LOVED watching that.

Once I was sure she had al lthe basic sounds down, we added in Leap frog Word factory and BOB books and ..WAH LA!! A reader! LOL

starfall.com is free and awesome!

The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading is great!  I also really recommend BOB books.
