How long does each child stay on a topic. average time. Now lets not brag! Every child can find a interest and can do months of research and time on it. I am talking about the "normal" amount of time they spend on a OKAY kind of interest topic. Thanks
Janine
my daughter is in 7th grade and we do a week at a time...So we are doing earth science for the whole year and we are doing plate tectonics (again, blah lol) so we will spend a week on that of note taking in our note books as well as experiments.
Math we do a chapter a day since we use Saxon and it is a ton of review in every chapter.
History we do a week at a time also. So for Egypt we will do a week of note taking in our notebooks as well as videos, online stuff and hands on stuff as well (making pyramids, etc).
Reading is on her own, she reads a book about every 3 days depending how big it is it can take up to a week then we simply talk about it.
Writing, she writes in a journal every day and on Fridays she has to write a history report using her notes.

days we play, etc. :)
Oh, that sounds like my son! He is 6. First it was angry birds, he'd play, then watch youtube, then set it up in real life and make his own video. Now he's playing Kirby on the wii. He makes the characters with his trio blocks and he gets mad at me when I can't figure out who's who, lol.
Quoting my2.5boys:
My kids have been totally focused on minecraft (computer game) for the last three months or so. When they are not playing minecraft, they are watching youtube videos of other people playing minecraft. This is the longest something has held their interest. Generally speaking they are not interested in anything for longer than five to ten minutes. Just long enough for us to have a quick conversation, and then they are rest to drop it. They are six and eight years old.

Change that to 7 and 8 yrs old and that's my boys! I still have minecraft parodies stuck in my head! It's also infected my 5yr old dd and 13yr old dd. Annnnd maybe me and my sister...those 3x3 blocks are addictive.
Swear to yall, as I read these responses, my 6 year old is playing minecraft!
Can we count that as educational?

Right now, 4 of our 5 computers are on minecraft. I'm going to go with yes, give me some time and I'm sure I can cover every subject with an aspect of minecraft. Besides the obvious of geography, ecosystems, math, logic, and social aspects. So, see, it's not that bad I swear...*goes back to mining*
On the original topic, we spend about 30 mins a day depending on the subject.
On the minecraft topic, sorry but I had to:
I have an 11 year old who is also MineCraft addicted. He has even taught him self how to do computer networking and set up a server because of his interest in this game/ learning tool. He has been actively participating in the MineCraft community for the past 2 years.
And YES! I count MineCraft as a learning tool. Besides the technologycal aspect, there is applied science in use, art and design, social and team building, if they chat with text then they must type and read.
Now normal subjects that we do either at home or in co-op as part of his curriculum, maybe a few hours to a few days at best. My 14 year old of course has a longer attention span but it is more about finding what interest them if you want to hold their attention.
It's not easy being a mother. If it were easy, fathers would do it. ~From the tv show The Golden Girls God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers. ~Jewish Proverb When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren, Women and Beauty
