I am trying to decide between the two programs for my Kinder DS. They both seem to have the manipulative/hands on work that he needs, and both have good reviews as far as I can tell.
Has anybody used either of these? What did you like? Dislike?
Thanks! (piog)
The only drawback I had was with DS2. Once he gets frustrated, he lockks down and needs to do something different for a while. That isn't easy to do with a mastery program. He did fine through the basics but got hysterical with Epsilon (fractions). He just wasn't processing it.
My oldest did it up through Algebra but has decided to go to public school this year. I'm sure DD will do well with it.
Is there much review from one level to the next? I would hate to spend a year working on something only to have it forgotten from lack of practice!
Is your oldest on track with the PS math for his grade level?
Each page has like 15 problems. Pages A,B &C are only the new lesson. Pages D,E,F have new and cummulitve review. We do math 4 days a week. I have the kids do 2 pages a day.. A&D, B&E, D&F and the test on Friday.
by doing them out of order they get new and review each day.
If they get 90~100% on Monday A&D, I may only have them do the review pages the next two days and NOT pages B & C.
Oh, cool! That is exactly the type of info I was looking for! Thanks so much!
You're welcome....
You also asked, and I totall yskipped it...if he would be on grade level for public school. NO they would not be. In some ways they would be ahead of them, and in other ways they would be behind.
For example, 1st grade is Addition Alpha.. they would doEVERYTHING related to addition including 3-4 or more digit with carrying, where as the LONGER digit addition isn't taught in public school until 2nd grade.
Same thing with 3rd grade - in MUS it is ONLY multiplication whereas the public school will be introducing division in 3rd grade - however they will do MUCH higher mutliplication skills, 4th and 5th grade equivalent than the 3rd grade public school. So, IMO, by time they have completed 4th grade, which is addition (1st) subtraction (2nd), Multiplication (3rd) and Division (4th) then Fractions is 5th and OMG... the fractions year brings them right up to AND ABOVE grade standard.
Not only at grade level by 6th - but also hae a MUCH stronger grasp of the how and why it works.
MUS is a TOTALLY different program than PS and will cause some issues with "catching up" if you put them in public school before grade 5... IMO

Jinx - Homeschooling, Scouting & Karate butt-kicking Mom to Star Scout Ian 1/98, Scout Sean 9/00, Junior GS Heidi 4/03. Wife to Joe & Alpha to German Shepherd Spazz.
We use MUS much like Jinx does... with a page of new and a page of review each day. We also supplement with Math Mammoth, for some different ways of getting the questions/problems. Gamma (Multiplication) took between 12-18 months for both my older girls, but we're moving through Delta (Division) at a quicker pace. The oldest should be into Epsilon by Christmas.
The only time we've ever had any "behind" the public school issues, is during standardized testing... as we do those only for my benefit now, it's not a big deal.
We're a military family, so it's likely we will spend some time in some states that do require testing. Whether they pass for their age/grade level is a nonissue for me, though. I can tell already that. DS will be working in different levels for different subjects. As long as the kiddo's are thriving they are on the right level.
Thanks, again!
