Topic of the Week: July 6-12

How did you feel when you first found out your child had a disability?

Who told you?  How did you feel?

How did you handle it?  Who did you tell?  Did you tell people right away?  How did they react?

How do you feel now and how are you dealing with it now?

Do you have any advice for other moms?

*Special thanks* to Jenn (dnjbowen) for our topic this week.

  • How did you feel when you first found out your child had a disability?
    Very overwhelmed

Who told you?  How did you feel?
My OBGYN at my 32 week check up, I felt nervous and scared and confused because she couldnt give me details on the situation

How did you handle it?  Who did you tell?  Did you tell people right away?  How did they react?
I started Crying, I told my husband . It took a bit to compose myself and call my mother and tell her. She reacted very positive and tried to console  me. As for everyone else they asked questions that I didnt have answers to . My baby has hydrocephalus and a rare condition Agenesis of the corpus callosum ( which is the part of the brain that connects the right and left of the brain is missing). I couldnt answer questions because I wasnt getting concrete answers myself and that fustrated me.

How do you feel now and how are you dealing with it now?
Now I feel differently I'm not nervous or scared definitely not overwhelmed. I'm extremely happy with Jaelyn's progress.

Do you have any advice for other moms?
My advice would have to be be strong because what doesnt break you makes you stronger. It will not be easy in the beginning, but you will learn to cope and deal with the situation and in order to do that you need to be able to talk about what and how u are feeling. You need people that will support you, your family and friends, a group at cafemom.com : ).  AND laslty "Do Not' compare your child to another.( you will drive urself crazy) remember each child progresses at their own pace.
