Justify my spending with receipts??

• when my dtr recd ssi because of her dad they had me to fill out a form about how much i spent and how much i saved.

• I'm just starting into all this stuff myself.What I was told is that the reciepts should be kept just in case there's ever a question on anything. Mainly, if you can keep a written record so you can fill out the form they use to report it and show where the expenses went to you should be fine.I'm planning to use an accounting ledger and just carry it with me when I do errands or pay bills. That way I can write it down as I pay things out. The plan is that I'll also put reciepts into it, but I know those sometimes get stuffed ina  purse or something so we'll see if that always happens :) They mainly want to know where most of the money is going and that it is actually getting spent on the child.

• It is a good idea to keep reciepts for everything when you are getting SSI.  Each year I get a form asking how much did you spend on supporting Robby, and how much did you save.  I ALWAYS say I spent 100% on support for Robby.  If you are saving any of it, they could argue you don't need it and take it away.  However, having the SSI does make it easier to save other money we bring in-if that makes sense.  I have never been asked to show reciepts but I do have them.  I also have the old utility bills etc, and cancelled checks for rent and things like that.  But I also run businesses out of my home and keep all receipts anyway for that.   You are supposed to keep reciepts, but I have never been asked to produce them.  If I were you I would get a shoe box, and make it a habit, I keep all receipts in my purse, and then once a week, I clean out my purse, I have my folders on side and the garbage can on the other.  I have to seperate my reciepts, specifically business 1, business 2, combined, or household.  So I have little files for them all...yes I am over organized...but would go crazy if I wasn't!!!

•  They have told me that everytime I talk to them....once every few months for almost 2 years now.  But I have never been asked to produce them.  But like I said, I do  keep them in case I ever am asked.  I think they just want you to know that you should be able to account for the money.

• I was just at the social security office yesterday to get the final paperwork done so we could apply for my son. I was told to keep the reciepts, but that they usually only ask to look at them if they think there's something odd about the ssi acount. Generally, if you're actually spending the money on legitimate expenses for your child they won't ask to see them. I was warned that they may do random audits of pay though so keeping the bank account from going over what the cap is and saving old pay stubs is also important.

• Its true what I did is used a debit/ credit card and hande over my statements when it was time. This way if it was a clothing store they knew it was clothes. Grocery store the same. Paid bills online withit SSI Is wose that the IRS. Good Luck and keeping receipts is a pain but the bankStatements online is the easiest.

• Brandon is 6 and I've never been asked to produce a reciept. I don't make a lot of money so it's pretty obvious all the money goes to supporting him.

• I've never even been told to keep receipts.  They have said that you need to make sure you are spending the money on the child and if that is questioned, they may ask for proof of some sort of what was spent where, but I really don't think that keeping all the receipts is totally necessary.
