East 72nd St. Fishing Area is a birding site within Cleveland Lakefront State Park. Its habitat is the open waters of Lake Erie and the terrain is pancake flat so you'll be standing on sidewalks or level ground and doing very little walking. Winter regulars here include: Canvasback, Redhead, both scaup, scoters, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, and Common, Red-breasted, and Hooded Mergansers. Early November is a good time to visit here, because this is when huge numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls arrive, thru February.
The Wilds in Cumberland is a private large-animal research facility. The habitat is primarily grassland but also has lakes, wetlands, and forests. In winter you'll see: Northern Harriers, Rough-legged Hawks, Golden Eagles, and Short-eared Owls, just to name a few. Grassland breeders seen here include: Henslow's Sparrows, Dickcissels, and Bobolinks. May through August is best to go to see breeders; December through February for raptors.
