Communication has always been a big issue for Jerry, and as he has gotten older it has become even more important for him to be able to communicate his needs as well as for us as parents to be able to communicate with him. Throwing himself in the floor and crying is normal for him; it's just his way of expressing his frustration at not being able to tell us what he wants. This leaves us playing the guessing game. We know him so well that it is usually pretty easy to narrow his needs/wants down to a few things and get it taken care of. But obviously this system cannot continue forever, so better communication is a big concern.
He loves hugs and kisses and will come and get my lap if he wants to cuddle (if only for a moment lol). Just this year he has begun to give kisses, and he does that often. He loves to play hand games like patty-cake and the itsy bitsy spider, but he needs help. He will take my hands to initiate, but doesn't go through the motions on his own.
Lately Jerry has been making breakthroughs with his communicating. :) About a month ago, he began bringing his cup to us when he wants a drink. In the beginning he would just kind of throw it at us, but that was ok. We were so excited! Now he hands it to us and looks at us expectantly. LOVE IT!! If the toy he wants to play with won't come on or if the shoe he wants to spin has a knot in the strings, he will bring it to us to "fix" for him. And this morning, something new! When he got up, he had in his hands his favorite movie (The Best of Elmo) and the remote! He brought them to me, whining a little bit. He was so happy when I put that movie in for him!
Ah baby steps...but such big accomplishments! Hey guess what? We are getting there!!
