So, my first grader, Joaquin, took his first spelling test today. Just over a year ago, I fought the developmental preschool on putting him in life skills rather than regular ed. He has speech and motor delays (all unexplained, still...). They thought he would be miserable and unsuccessful in a regular ed classroom. I felt that regular ed was his least restrictive environment, though, and pushed it. They finally decided to give it a go and see how he did. He made it through Kindergarten. None of their concerns ever came to light. Of course, there were other issues, but he made it! Now he's in first grade. I didn't know he was going to take a spelling test this week, so he didn't get extra support at home. The teacher did provide accomodations (1:1, said words slowly), the writing leaves much to be desired, but he got 8/10 correct!!! One he didn't attempt and one he actually wrote the letters in the right order, he just put the t in front of the a instead of after it. The list was not modified. :) So proud of him!!!! And so happy he has a teacher that's willing to do minor accommodations to see his true potential.
Yay!!!
