This may be too late to help him with his homework, but if he has it again this week it may help.

www.mathisfun.com - search for long division.

Link for animated process.

My daughter started it about 3 weeks ago. The first two nights were AWFUL.  The first night was so bad that I called a halt to the homework after 5 problems, and wrote a note in her planner to her teacher, saying that she just didn't understand it at all.

At my daughter's elem. school they taught them several different ways to do division and told them to choose the one that was easiest.  All MOMMY knows is long division so that is what I taught my daughter.  There are tons of websites available - just google long division and your child's grade/age and they should have plenty of info and teaching aids.

One thing we have found helpful is when dividing into a multidigit number we use a 0 as a place holder - in the subtraction under the work - if that makes sense.  We struggled for a while over the whole deal but eventually she got it - it just sort of clicked one day.

If all else fails, I found a fantastic tutor on Wyzant.com. She's the best he's every had, the least expensive and she comes to us.

I imagine this will be an ongoing battle, like our house.  Here is a method you can try for division.  My daughter's teacher just sent home a letter referencing several URLs that you can learn different methods of division.  Check out this video:

http://www.mathatube.com/e-partial-quotient-method.html

They may some other methods too.  I imagine you could go to the main page and find other things too.

You may want to ask the teacher to over it again, either in an afternoon class or lunch time.
