My DD wants this for her Bday and has asked her Grandparents for it.

Can someone tell me about it.

Does it have internet /texting/email - anything inappropriate?

We are careful when it comes to these things.

Thanks

IPOD touch has full internet capabilities. She can hook up to someones internet if they do not have it password protected. My advice is do not get her the touch. I would just get her the regualr I POD. FYI if the screen breaks, it only costs 10 dollars more to buy a new one versus fixing the screen. If she just wants it to listen to music, I wouldn't suggest the touch.

My 11 y/o wanted one for xmas, and it's showing up again on her birthday wish list. I've just said no. Too young for an internet connection, too young to be walking around with that expensive a toy.

My 14 y/o wanted a phone w internet on it. We've compromised - she has to pay for most of the phone cost, and it has to be a phone model that can work with or without the internet, and she is paying for the internet service. If at anytime her responsibilities (school work, home chores, grades) aren't getting done, the phone gets turned off. If at any time she is being irresponsible with internet access, that portion of her phone service gets turned off.

I am more concerned about the lack of supervision - I watch over my kids when they are on the computer at home. To me, this seems like letting them walk around with the internet and all the dangers of it. Am I wrong? My dds 9 year old friend just got one?!

I agree with you totally. I have never regretted being one of the last moms to cave, and usually regretting being in the forerunner pack on these things. My 6th grader gets to have a facebook account when she starts 7th grade, with me checking periodically what's on there. Once she has proven to me over a year that she is completely responsible with that internet access, I will consider her entry to the same rules on phone internet that her older sister has.
