Is she too young for tampons?

Hello cafemoms! My daughter will be 10 yrs old in 2 days. I had a great bday trip planned this weekend that involved a water park. My daughter got her period last night. Bummer!  This is month 2 of her period. Thinking of cancelling our trip. I was brought up believing that only 'women' use tampons.  I remember using my 1st tampon behind my mother's back at age 14 or so.  Clearly I didn't listen!  I do feel that my baby is too young. Please share your thoughts.

Wow im sorry she is so young to have her period already. Personally I started my period at 13, I didnt wear tampons til I lost my virginity at almost 18. We spent summers at my grandparents and I wouldnt go swimming at all when I was bleeding cuz I wore pads. I have a daughter who will be 11 in April, although she hasnt started period yet I couldnt imagine giving her tampons. I think its a personal choice, for her to make along with what a doctor says. Good luck mama!

I think that 10 is far too young for a tampon.  There are inherent risks associated with tampon use of course- and at only 2 months into a period, she may not remove it often enough to prevent any type of infection.

I don't see anything "sexual" about it - just risk of infection from not managing removal

My daughter is 12.  She started at 10.  We tried the pads, but messy and summertime, so I let her try tampons.  She has to change them just as ofter as she did the pads.  ANd I am on her constantly to remind her to change, and she's like I just did mom, thats what I was doing....  they have jr's for tweens.  She didn't want me to explain how to use them, so I gave her the directions and told her she could try as many times as she'd like til it was comfortable.  First day she was just like this is weird, but after than, she's been perfectly fine with them.

I think that she is too young. I didn't start using them until I was about 14 or 15 and my DD won't either.

I think it's probably too young. I was 11 when I got mine and I remember being stuck one time without pads and my mom only had tampons, so i tried it, and it was a horrible experience because I was so small. I think she should wait until she's like 14-15 at least.

Why do people say you can't have your cake and eat it too? Why would somebody get cake if they can't eat it??!!

So maybe a different kind of holiday is in order?

Yes, she is too young. My DD started at 11 and at 16 she is still not ready to try tampons. She has always had the option of using them, but just not interested.

The first time I used them I was sore for the whole period.

my 5 cents.

Well, why not? I would say she may be young, but if she is mature enough to have her period, i dont think she is too young to try them.  Get the smooth jr. ones with the rounded applicator. Get her to read all the info, stress the importance of changing them often, and go from their. Why not make summer time and swimming easier if your able to?

Personalyl no I don't see the tampons are only for women thing. They aren't for pleasure they are for comfort :O) I think leave it up to her.
