Bedtime for 12 year old?

He is complaining that nobody since 4 th grade has had a bedtime. I make him go in his room at 8:30. He can read, which he normally does, until he falls asleep around 10. I feel he needs this time to unwind (and so do I). Plus he has to get up at 6 am so we can leave by 7:10in the am.
He says I'm treating him like a baby . But, really I just want him off the computer/games...and I want him to have down time..

Am I being overbearing?

He's just trying to get out of bedtime! Lol! I don't know any kids this age who don't have a bedtime. My oldest is 13. He goes to his room by 8:30, in bed with lights out by 9. He listens to audio books sometimes till he falls asleep, if he doesn't feel sleepy at 9. He gets up at 6 though.

Mine goes to bed as close to 8:30 as possible, with lights out at 9. Sometimes she had to stay up later because of scheduling, and other times I try to get her to bed earlier because of morning obligations (She often had to be up at 6). She never complains and sees the benefits of getting enough sleep because she is very aware of her health and body and doesn't like feeling unwell.

My DD is 11 (almost 12) and has to be in bed at 8:30 with lights out by 9:00.  She gets up at 6:30 and needs the sleep.  If she doesn't she's a nightmare to deal with.

My 12yo dd is not like most 12yos. She (like me) only needs about 6hrs of sleep a night. So if she goes to sleep before, say, midnight, she wakes up at 4am or so and can't go back to sleep. So she goes to her bed at 10pm, but she's usually awake reading or watching TV or whatever until about midnight. She gets up at 6:15am for school.

You can tell him that it is a fact of his health as the pediatrics association of america recommends that a child of 12 requires 10 hrs of sleep each night in order to function at full potential mentally, physicaly and emotionally. He wont be able to argue w/ that! lol!!!! My 12 yro has to be in bed at 8:30pm and can watch t.v. play a game or read until 9pm and then lights out, no arguement. She wakes at 7am and off to school on the bus at 8:15am. If she had to leave earlier, then I would make her bedtime earlier as w/ my 6yo son who has to go to bed at 8pm and wakes at 6am. Stick w/ your gaurd mama, you know what's best! There's always the, "im not their mom Im yours" answer. lol!

we try to make excuses for ower kids bad behavior. when its ower fault for letting it happen in first place.we need to show them how to behave. dont make excuses ..make solutions ..
