Do you use a tent, camper or cabin? We are going to start taking our kids this year and we just ordered our first tent. There are 5 of us and we ordered a 3 room, 10 person tent, lol.

We alternate years between tent & cabin. I love cabin years because it's so much more relaxing & peaceful.
This year is a tent year. We have 5 people & a large 4 room tent. We also have a "kitchen" tent. And I agree on the air mattresses!!
Quoting Morrigan333:We've never been camping and my dd is 11 1/2. wemay try the back yard first..She's not really an outdoorsy kind of girl. I mean she plays outside and all, but "roughing it", might just be a bit to "rough" for her.
Quoting steelcrazy:We have a pop-up and 4 tents, although 1 of the tents has never been used outside and is for indoor use only. My boys put it up in our familyroom and "camp" there a few times every winter. The indoor tent is a 6 person tent, we also have a 8 person tent, and 2 2-person tents. If the boys want to be alone, then they each use a 2-person tent while we are camping. Sometimes they tent together in the 8 person tent and very rarely they are in the camper with hubs, the dog, and I. Our pop-up has 2 king beds on the ends, a the dinette becomes a bed and so does the couch, but that is where the dog sleeps since it is at the bottom of my bed.
There's usually a Walmart within a reasonable drive of most campgrounds- none of our camping trips would be complete w/o a Wally World stop after setting up, for either something we forgot or just b/c we didn't do the grocery shopping before heading out.

I've never packed for camping before. I hope I don't forget a lot of stuff.

I used to take my kids all of the time. There would be a bunch of us who got together and went. Part of me misses it but not the part that has to get everything and everyone packed.

Yeah, I suppose it matters how long you're camping, how much you pack, etc. But for us, we typically tent for a week at a time. The room on the right holds the full size air mattress for DH and I. The room on the left holds a full size air mattress for the 2 younger kids (8 and 5) and previously our older son fit there as well. The back room holds our luggage - and it is pretty darn full. Then we have the "main room" which when they were younger we used to 'hang out', play games, etc. A nice, open space. But this year, we need to use that room for my oldest son's (12) twin air mattress.
Quoting psych_mom:
I asked DH if we should go larger with the tent and he laughed at me, lol. Maybe I should show him your post.

We are going to have all three of the kids in one room in their sleeping bags, dh and I will be in our own room and the middle room will be our "family room" for now. Now my mom has started that her and my dad will want to go with us as well. They will have to get their own tent and own camping site. My mom snores like crazy. lol.

The only time I might actually be happy about going to Wally World, lol.

That worked for us when the boys were little...but now my 12 year old (will be 13 by the time we camp this summer) towers over me, so he doesn't quite fit in that room with his brothers anymore, LOL :)

Make a list of everything you will need and check it off as you go. It's a life saver.
