I hate summer vacation

My oldest DD has a bit of a weight problem. it isn't horrible, she just gets tubby really easily. during the school year, sheis involved in a bunch of extra curriculars that keep her physically active (volleyball club, choir, etc) and she also has recess, so she get plenty of exercise. During the summer, it is not the same, so she always gains a bunch of weight. There really isn't any low cost local thing she can do-everythig always costs an arm and a leg, and it is too hot to go to the park or have her running aorund outside.

And it isn't like She is getting filled full of junk food. I only buy fruits and veggies for snacks (don't do anything but rice vinegar for saucs, since it has zero claories), do lean meats and veggies for dinner, etc. Everybody else in the fmily is a normal, healthy weight. She just happens to be the heavy one.

We are trying out zumba for a bit to see if that helps, but I can't wait for school to start so that she can run some of this stuff off.

Nope. Atleast none in my area.

Do you have a local pool or a friend with a pool or a local gym (as in, an actual gym to run around in and stuff?) I've heard swimming can really shed some pounds and I know our community pool is fairly inexpensive to go to. Also, we have a community gymnasium and I guess at night they have "family time" where families can just go in and shoot hoops and stuff for like a $1 a session or something.

Maybe just go for walks or bike rides after dinner when it's cooler?

We try to do all of that, except the walks, we live on a major roadway, so it isn't safe. Just have to hang on a few more weeks, and then everything will go back to normal. In the meantime, I limit screen time, and only offer healthy foods. Encourage in door physical activity (Zimbabwe, dancing around the house like crazy people, chasing her down and tickling her...) and hope for the best.

I know that it is hot outside- I live in GA and it gets super hot here as well, but I still make my kids go out in the morning or in the evening and play- ride their bikes or do just anything to get them moving. Can she go out during these times? Also how old is she? Could it be a thyroid problem that is causing her metabolism to slow down? Is there a Y close by that you could go to?

My older son sounds just like her! We play a lot of "midnight soccer" (or baseball, hockey, football, etc) in the summer. We wait until 9ish, when the sun is long gone and the streets have cooled to go out and play. It's actually more fun and challenging at night, and the kids really enjoy it more!

Our local beach offers a gym memebership to it's residents. For children 14 to 18 it's $36.00  year. My daughter wants to do this to tone up. She's not over weight by any stretch of the imagination, it's just something she wants to do and I wont discourage her.

Do you have a local YMCA?

If she likes dancing, you can borrow many dance and exercise videos from the library for free!

If she's eating healthy and is normally active, then I don't see what the issue is. I'm a little concerned that you're focusing a little too much on her weight which could lead to self esteem issues for her.

Or is the issue that she's not active in the summer? I'm confused.

I was wondering the same thing Barbara.
