Question about starting middle school?

My ds (12) will be starting middle school this year which means he will be changing in the locker room. Didn't think this would be a big deal. However, I got a call from one of my son's friend's mothers who he had recently had a sleepover with and apparently she had noticed a pair of his briefs on her bathroom floor and she informed me that none of the kids wear briefs anymore. She told me the kids all either wear boxers or boxer-briefs. She told me that years ago one of her older sons came home and was embarrassed to be the only one wearing briefs and they had to go get him some new underwear.

So, I decided to go out and get my son a few pairs of boxers and boxer briefs in fear that he would get made fun of. Unfortunately, he didn't really find these very comfortable so he decided not to wear them and is going to stick with the briefs.

Should I be worried about him getting teased in the locker room? Is this really a big deal or is this mother exaggerating?

I wouldn't say she is exaggerating- my 16 year old DS wears boxers. I wouldn't know about his friends, but I also don't care. Whatever my son feels comfortable in is what I am going to buy him. As for my 9 year old son he just recently asked me to buy him more grown up briefs (as opposed to the ones with the characters). I'm thinking my 3 year old DS is going to be like his bigger brother because he is always asking to wear just his gym shorts around the house! lol.
