Now... you should start talking to him about age appropriate things now and continue the conversation as he gets older. Don't let it be a one time thing.

When he asks. present it calmly, use the appropriate words and be factual.

SEx is not just the act of sexual intercourse but it begins with understanding the body.  I have already told my girls that a baby is made from something called a sperm that comes from a man and given to a woman.  If it goes into a woman's egg in her belly area, then a baby starts to grow.  We have also openly talked about changes their body will go through.  I change in front of them so they see my boobs and my pubic hair and we talk about it.

With my 9 year old, we have read Care & Keeping of You together so I can talk about the changes she will have including her period and why she will have it.

I have not talked, yet, about how the sperm gets into a woman's body though.

This....at least...depends on the kid and their curiosity. If they sense you're uncomfortable they'll be uncomfortable too. You need to be relaxed so they will be open with you.

When he was 5 or 6.

Do you mean the act itself, or growing up/puberty/etc?

If you haven't discussed puberty w/ him yet, you need to asap. That can lead naturally into more info about sex.

I never picked an age to talk about sex, I answered questions as they came up.
