Hi I have an 11 year old who we just gave a cell phone for emergency's . I have recently found out that he put a app on his phone called kik . It's some kind of msg app to talk to your friends . He has been talking to a girl his age and had asked her for a picture of her breast . I freaked out and took his phone away . Please help me figure out if this is normal .simple frown

KIK can be used to talk to any person in the world just by typing in their username - Does he know this girl in real life? Are you sure of this? And I'd sit him down and tell him that if this was really a child that he was communicating with that he could be charged with child porn.

What kind of phone did you give him? If it was for emergencies you should have just gotten him a basic phone, not trying to be mean, just saying. Did you set ground rules for the phone before you gave it to him? I don't think he is mature enough to have the phone and he just showed you that by his behavior. I would not be giving it back and I would also tell him that since he can't be trusted and wants to act so immature that he will not be going places where there will not be an adult present for him to need the phone.

Is it normal? Unfortunately, yes.

Did he do something wrong and should be punished for it? Definitely. If the girl actually sent him the picture, both could be in serious trouble for child porn.

What do you need to do? Punish him. Set guidelines for the phone going forward. Have multiple talks about the dangers associated with social media.

I've heard there's a good Lifetime movie about teens and texting that you might want to watch with him.

I'm not 100 percent sure it's actually a girl he knows and I explained that to him . It shows they stared talking on Wednesday of this week . Also you can tell the pic is of a model in a bra . Thanks for your help .

So you did everything right by making sure he knew the rules and you did everything right by immediately taking the phone. Hopefully he realizes how serious this is and doesn't repeat this behavior in the future- I would hope not since he isn't getting the phone back and it is probably going to be a long, long time before you let him have another.
