12 yr old hormonal daughter came in from dance and asked if she could have a sleep over.  "No, dear, I'm sorry but it is your cousin's first communion tomorrow morning."  She proceeded to throw a fit...."it's not fair"  "he doenst even like me" "he wont care" pout pout stomp stomp.

I kept mopping and never looked up.  Finally she got right in my space and said "hey why are you ignoring me?"

Usually I buy into the fit and start rationalizing my answer - didnt ever work...so I decided to try a more mature approach.

"Because I gave you an answer.  And you are acting like a child."  In a very rude manner she said "I am a child"  I turned and said calmly "Then hand over your cell phone, child"

I got the phone (she is not allowed to use it in the house so it isnt much of a punishment....but it made a point) and she said ok.

OMG OMG....as I was typing this she came down (after her shower) with a totally new attitude.  Hugged me and apologized!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holly Sugar.........I think I'm on to something!!!!!!!

Woo Hoo!!!!  Yea for you!!!!  I am gonna try that.

I tend to justify my decisions to my son and I can see it is going to get me no where.    His eyes glaze over with each of my lectures...so I am going to try lecturing and rationalizing yes and being more clear and concise more.

Congrats again!

Oooo!  This is great!  I predict I'll be able to try this technique on my nearly-11-year-old sassy daughter within in the next few hours!

Good for you!  Smart thinking - I need to try that, too.  I always tend to rationalize.  It gets frustrating.  Thanks for the tip!!

Hugs,
Dawn
