My 12yo has had a house key for a couple years now. Her key is just on a ring with a clip and she keeps it clipped to the key ring that's attached inside the front pocket of her backpack.
Ds1 keeps it on a keychain in his backpack. Ds2 and dd do not have their own copies yet.
They have key chains they can clip on to belt loops, backbacks, etc.
He doesn't carry one. He's 11, comes home first, and knows where the key is. We live in a rural area where there are no homes around ours.
The kids don't carry one, they know where I keep the spare.
My oldest son has a red and white lanyard that my youngest got from the American Heart Association hoops/jump for heart program this year.
My youngest son has an USAF lanyard that I got when they visited the high school I work in.
