what should I expect?

I have had problems with my dd and her not being able to or just not wanting to concentrate on her school work and, since 3rd grade, reading. Her teacher is concerned about it and called me at home which led to a 30 minute meeting this morning. My dd shrugged her shoulders when the teacher asked if there was something going on we (as adults) could help her with. I did find out she hasn't been wearing her glasses in school at all. She needs them fro reading and they are strong.

We asked if she was having problems concentrating because of an outside source and she said no. So her teacher asked if she was just having problems concentrating on general and she replied yes. I asked dd if she would like me to call her doctor and get a referral for a evaluation to see if she needs meds to help her, she said yes.

Well, she now has an appointment for May 1st and I am wondering what all will go on. What will happen during this eval to determine whether or not she had ADD (she's not hyper)? Will they give us things to try to help without us having to put her on drugs that will forever change how her brain works?

Even if they immediately recommend meds, as some doctors will. That does NOT mean you need to put her on them.  There are so many supplements, vitamins and dietary changes that can greatly effect ADD/ADHD.  I find these methods to be the absolute first step after a diagnosis.  I am not a fan of medicating children (or adults really) unless absolutely necessary and ADD meds are NOT always necessary.  There are preservatives and artificial colors that can cause reactions of ADD/ADHD as well as vitamin deficiencies.  Start digging now into alternatives to the meds as well as side effects of the meds also.  Like, if the doc recommends meds ask him to write down what he suggests and say you want to look into all of oyur options and you'll let him know.  Then you can look up the specific med and the possible side effects. I have heard (froma  friend w/ a kid diagnosed ADHD) that some of those meds actually alter the blood flow to the brain!

Also, I remember taking my glasses off ats chool too cause I thought i looked dorky! ;) lol

Can I also suggest you have her checked by a speech therapist?  This is something quite common where I live (in France), and they can test for and help with dyslexia which comes in many forms, or simply make sure the child is applying all the rules of the language when he/she reads, writes, speaks.

My DD started having trouble in 2nd grade. She tested well so I had to take her to a neurologist to be tested for ADD in order to get her extra help in school. He did diagnose her with ADD but she also has Central Auditory Processing which means it takesr longer for her to understand things. She has the most trouble with math. I have never given her medication as the school counselor suggested. She is now in 6th grade and has been doing better since 5th grade. She doesn't seem to have much trouble with concentration. Before you do any medication I would have her tested for central auditory. My neighbor is a specialist on child development,  she looked at the school report and told me she doesn't have ADD. She is the one that told me to have her checked for the Central Auditory.
