My 11 year old dd has asked for one, The kindle( is the wireless reading device). It is like $300.00, I was just wondering if anyone has one or has gotten one for your kid....would like to know if you like it or was is a waste of money.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle...would I by it for my 13 year old.. HECK NO! It is more delicate than a Ipod and WILL break if dropped. My 13 year old is ULTRA responsible but I still wouldn't spend 300$ on the Kindle for her.

A cheap (maybe even used) laptop would cost less, and could also be used for schoolwork...

I haven't heard of this either and my son has severe learning disabilities. We are having him tested in "assisted technologies" at school soon. Is this something that would help a kid who comprehends but has difficulty reading text?

Essentially a Kindle(the amazon device) is an E reader. It is basically like having a BUNCH of paperbacks or books on one device. You can take notes and change the size of the text and I think even arrange it to read the text aloud. It isn't a toy. It is really for serious readers. I have about 45 books on my Kindle right now and I read about a book every 2 days. There are some free books but most new releases aren't free and some authors(like JK Rowlings) will not allow their books to become available for download onto an EReader.

I didnt pay $300 for a kindle player but my Iphone kinda does the same thing. I have acess to everything in the library plus all the other cool stuff the Iphone does. Maybe you dont wanna get an Iphone but how about an Ipod touch? My Iphone has been dropped a lot and it still works just fine. I personally dont like it, I got one book thur Kindle and I haveonly read like one chapter. I'd rather have the paper back book, but thats just me I also dont like to read long articles or post on the computer. But I can read a book all day. Also what I have found myself doing a lot lately is downloading books to listen to on my Iphone while I'm driving or walking or whatever do thats a plus to the Iphone/Ipod. Plus if the kid doesnt lile it or is not using it you can.

You could always check http://ereaderquestions.com/ if you want a better comparison. Personally I like the Nook.
