Hello everyone. I am a new mommy to a beautiful baby boy who was born a preemie due to me having preeclampsia. Over the past week or so, Jonathan has started acting colicky. I think the past 2 nights have been the worst. He just cries and cries. I tried the mylicon first and didn't get any results from it. I am now on Little Tummies Gripe Water. The only thing I see it doing is making him pass gas. When he is trying to pass the gas though, he gets so frustrated and starts this horrible screaming and crying. I know he is in pain. I just don't know what else to do. He is mainly breastfed but the doc wants me to feed him some formula to get extra calories. He only gets 2 bottles a day usually. He is pooping once to twice a day and eating normally. He won't burp after feedings tho. And then there is all of this gas. WHAT CAN I DO??????? Do I need to limit my diet while breastfeeding or is there some magic trick I don't know about?? Oh, and the only way we have found that he can sleep is in his bouncy seat or on our chest with us sitting up. ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • well, it sounds like he likes motion so you may be in luck! slings, swings, and car rides can help soothe him, and give you a break. my friend has a preemie and she says she's more work than her older son was. that could be due to their extreme sensitivity, depending on how early he was born. anyway, as for the gas, i found what worked with my daughter was chamomile tea in warm water. it's all natural and caffeine free so it's safe for babies. we would give it to her a little after her bottle and then rub her tummy and it helped a lot. she would pass a lot of gas too, but it didn't seem to be as forceful as before. kinda more along a soft rumble. then she would go to sleep. sometimes though the amount would surprise her and she'd start screaming again, but she didn't sound in pain anymore. i wouls still try to force the burping though. that helps immensely. if you can't, ask your husband or another male hand. something about the way guys do it, i don't know, but whenever my daughter wouldn't burp for me (i would try for like 20 minutes or more!) i just handed her to my husband or father-in-law and after like two pats, rrrruuup! frustrating for me, but better for her. hope this helps, and good luck!!

  • i breastfed with my first son and i noticed certain foods i ate caused him to be gassier and cry all night. i dont know if its the same foods with everybody but i had problems with broccolli and onions. i would suggest trying to watch what ure eating and if you notice anything different when you dont eat certain foods.

  • My baby girl who is 9weeks old has some of the same symptoms. She had a hard time going to the bathroom so I switched to Soy formula and that seemed to help her. She has no problem now. . She has always been a very bad burper so we have tried My little tummy drops and that seems to help too but lately she just wants to be held and sometimes she just screams and her body goes stiff. She has always cried while eating her bottle. She will take a few ounces and then start shaking her head and then she is starts crying.. Her dr said it could be acid reflux but she doesnt spit up at all and she does have hiccups which she has had from day one as well.   Her dr said we will check her in 2months which will be her 4month check up.. She wants to be held alot more now but at night she will sleep anywhere from 4-6hrs..

could this be colic or acid reflux? I dont know since I a first time mom..

  • Hi,

I have two children a boy 7 years old and a girl 4 years old.

My son was born two months premature.  He had colic and projectile reflux.  Projectile reflux is when they spit up it comes flying out of their mouths in an arch.  My daughter was colic and had acid reflux.  With acid reflux there usually is no spitting up.  The acids are burning in their little tummies causing discomfort usually from what they are eating.  The good news is as their stomachs mature it all goes away.  However, living through it is very difficult.

Warm baths several times a day with a tummy rub, swing, chamamile tea(?) sorry too early in the morning for my spelling cap to be on and holding upright after each feeding.  Although there is no cure for colic except for maturity of your baby know, it does get better.  Fresh air also helps for a short while.

I lived through these dreadful days and understand what every new mom with a colic baby is going through.  They say you can never get two the same, do not believe them because I did.

When all passes there are great times lying ahead with you and your new bundle of joy.  Keep your head up and stay strong.

    Nancy
