I would like everyone to share some tips about soothing babies with colic. Just share what worked for you and I am going to make a sticky for new members to refer to.

Also I would like to think of ways to keep this group active. I have found it is a hard group to maintain since most babies only go through colic for a few months. Any ideas would be very helpful. The best method I use to find new members is to search recent journal entries for Colic. If anyone has extra time and would like to help with the group please send me a message.

  • I was in a baby chatroom and a woman suggested swaddling the baby, putting him in a bouncer, and keeping it bouncing with your foot.  I can't say that it always works or even works 100% but, it keeps my son calm for some time.

  • Okay this might sound crazy but this is one tip I always share with everyone....although I don't believe it works for every baby but it did wonders for my son.

The vacuum! I would lay him on the floor and place the vacuum a few feet away from him. I would leave it run and it was like a drug! He would sit there calm as can be and eventually pass out.

Another one that worked pretty well was putting him in his bouncer and sitting him on the bathroom floor with the shower running. The sound was very soothing for him.

Wearing your baby! I can't imagine how I we would have survived colic without our carrier. As soon as has decent head control he preferred to face out. I think the constant motion really soothed him belly.

  • swaddling in conjunction with a tight hold, pacifier and bouncing around the house like an idiot.

this is the only thing that works almost all the time for my son. as soon as you stop the bouncing it is all over, however. it is really helping to build up our muscles. hehe.

My son was the same way! Most babies like to be rocked or swayed...not my son. It was almost a voilent bounce! It could be pretty exahasting but it did the trick.

  • Buy the book the "Happiest Baby on the Block"

    The 5 s's for soothing:

    Swaddle
    Side or stomach laying
swing (pretty much the more bouncing the better)
    shhhhhhh! in the ear loudly
suck on pacifier or breast if breastfeeding

Believe it or not the step we use the most is the shhhhhhhhh!  It calms my daughter down and she seems to begin to be okay, well for as long as I continue to soother her! :)

  • I didn't hear about the "Happiest Baby On the Block" DVD until my baby was around 6 months old ( I think).  But I DID buy the DVD and watched it.  I think that it definitely would have helped me during the first few months of my babies life.

Here is the website to check it out and see how the world renowned Dr. Harvey Karp's 5 S's have helped grateful parents.

  • funny... my baby hated the swaddle after about 2wks old and just 2 days ago i did it again to try to ease the screams and it worked!  i have a cd that has vacuum noise on it along with tic toc, heartbeat with muffled music and stuff like that.  i play the vacuum sound over and over, swaddle her, then put her in the bouncy seat and she will be calm for about 10-20 minutes, depending on how lucky i am that day.

  • OK, here is what has worked for us so far:

Happiest baby technique:  He likes to be swaddled (though he will fight it until he is calmed down) and held cradle and bounced on my exercise ball!  The exercise ball has been a lifesaver.  However, after bouncing for an hour, you do need some tylenol.

#2 Colic Calm (www.coliccalm.com) I found this stuff online after doing a search- I was skeptical about it, but figured I would try it because I was desperate.  It is 100% natural, and is FDA approved.  I have found mixed results with it, but it does work 80% of the time.  When he is really fussy, I put the dosage in a medi paci, and he gobbles it down and stops crying.  It does wear off after about 30 min if you haven't gotten them to sleep, etc. but you can repeat the dosage.  The only neg. about it is that it is BLACK!! It has vegetable charcoal in it that removes gas, so his poop is black! But, I am deff. going to buy more bottles of it!! check it out.

The thing that helped us last night, after 3 hours of crying, was the vacuum!  My brother-in-law mentioned it to me, but we thought it was crazy!  Well, we were at the point of crazy last night and it worked like a dream!!!  I am going to do some research into finding a tape/cd so I don't wear my vaccum out!

When he is mildly fussy, bouncing and shhhing in his ear work too.

That is all the tips I have for now!

  • I just purchased the "pretty in pink" bouncer from fisher price and so far, so good. It's all about the vibration I think. For thirty dollars, I could buy one for each room in the house! LOL

  • Where did you get the CD with the vaccum sounds?
