I would like everyone to share some tips about soothing babies with colic. Just share what worked for you and I am going to make a sticky for new members to refer to.

Also I would like to think of ways to keep this group active. I have found it is a hard group to maintain since most babies only go through colic for a few months. Any ideas would be very helpful. The best method I use to find new members is to search recent journal entries for Colic. If anyone has extra time and would like to help with the group please send me a message.

  • well the swaddle and bounce is great. but for my son i give him mylicon before every feeding and then in between feedings if he is fussy i make camomile or peppermint tea or sometimes i combine the two with some boiled fennel seeds. adde less then half a tea spoon of sugar and just make sure its a little warm and my son is pretty comfortable.

  • the only thing that has helped so far is using the vent air bottles. other than that walking around holding him down by my stomach with my hands on his stomach and walking around keeps him quiet for a bit.

  • I just recently purchased the Happi Tummi. I didn't know if it would work but omggggg it works sooo well. I put this thing on my daughters tummy and she falls right asleep. The happy tummi is a band that wraps around baby. Inside is a pouch. The happi tummi comes with a pack of herbs that you heat up in the microwave then place in the pouch. the smells and the warmth knocks her out. I always use the method of repeating shhhh over and over also and that helps. Happi Tummi, SHHH, and the pacifier seem to do the trick! ALSO: Switch formulas maybe??

to get the happi tummi u can go to

  • I've tried Colic Calm remedy and I agree that it does seem to help but the black color/vegetable charcoal concerns me.  Supposedly vegetable charcoal interferes with absorption of nutrients.  I've ordered a product called Colic Ease which has very different ingredients and is herbal.  It's not FDA approved but neither are most natural products you'd purchase in a health food store.  Once I get it, I'll share my thoughts on it.  If anyone else has used it please share.

What I have been doing so far is using some of the techniques listed in the Soul, Mind, Body Healing book by Zhi Gang Sha.  I also lay with her, with her positioned on her side and I rub her tummy in circles from her right to her left.  I can feel her tighten up when she's trying to pass gas and if she starts to get red in the face, I sit her up or put her over my shoulder and pat her back.  We do this over and over...gets tiring but often works to eventually put her to sleep.  I also sometimes use my other hand to stroke her back at the same time I'm stroking her belly.

We have the Roomba vacuum and the sound of that seems to soothe her when I've put her down.  Although, she'll only let me put her down for maybe 10 minutes.  The sling has been helpful as well as the ergo carrier for walks outside.

  • I agree that running the vacuum and bouncing on the exercise ball were the most helpful for me.  Another thing I couldn't have done without is the Miracle Blanket.  My daughter was so hypersensitive to sound (she would startle if I was unloading the dishwasher THREE ROOMS AWAY!) that she constantly woke herself up.  The Miracle Blanket pins her arms at her sides and significantly helped keeping her from awakening herself with her sensitive startle reflex.

Other helpful things were shhhhing her (right next to her ear) and sometimes taking her for a ride in the car.  My husband would drive with her from 11 p.m. to midnight up and down the freeway (avoid stoplights if you can) so I could get one hour of sleep.  The hum of the road often quieted her.  And if it didn't quiet her, at least I had one hour of silence a day.

Another thing I noticed is she seemed to be so hypersensitive to stimulation that sometimes bouncing, shhhing and looking at her simultaneously would be way too much stimulation.  I ready somewhere to do one at a time.  She seemed to get more worked up if I did all three at once.

And most importantly...GET HELP!  Recruit family, friends, neighbors etc to watch your little one here and there so you can get out of the house.  Even if you just walk around the block, run an errand or go to the corner coffee shop for an hour, you need it and you deserve it.  Caring for a colicky baby is the most challenging thing I've ever done!!!   My daughter is 4 months old now and a completely different and SUPER HAPPY child.  Hang in there...I promise it does get better!

    1. I found that Dr. Brown's bottles work great for gassiness. I bought them for my son and within a few days we saw a big difference in the amount of gas in his tummy. I have also been told to try Playtex drop-ins.
    2. We changed his formula to lactose free for gas and fussiness due to colic
    3. Mylicon drops
    4. swaddling him to sleep
    5. the baby swing alternated with the vibrations of the bouncy seat
    6. rocking him in my arms while he faces my chest with his pacifier in his mouth and patting his butt firmly

(Please educate yourself before making decisions about your babies. Early cord clamping, Pitocin, Vitamin K, Vaccines.  "INFORMED DECISIONS" Make sure you know the facts before you decide!)
