My Daughter has to go back into the Dr (she's 25)  she had a strain of HPV show up on her pap....  the Dr. office told her that it's been there since 2006 but wasn't a very strong strain, but now it is????  I know nothing about this HPV... can anyone explain it to me?  She's panicing and I dont know what to say to her..

She went on friday for the follow up exam.  they told her for now every thing looks fine.  the strain that she has is the Severe one (meaning cancer)  she has to go back in December, and then again next June....  But for now they told her everything is okay and not to worry.

It can lay dormant for years before dysplasia develops..its the cells showing changes that they do something about. She will most likely be scheduled a colposcopy, then the cells will either be frozen or lasered away.

My paps were irregular and I had cells frozen/scraped off a few time after my first son was born. Then when my youngest was 3 I was told I had dysplasia and then cervical cancer.

She needs to follow up and get all the info before freaking out.

Prayers for you both

All I know is that it is a virus that can turn into cancer. He probably just wants to keep it in check and keep a careful watch on her. I read that a huge number of the population is walking around with it without even knowing it. Tell her shes, ok, she obviously has a good doctor.

I had the same thing in 1980 doctors then didn't know it was a virus....a colposcopy was done and everything has been great since then...99% of the time is treatable and not life threating....I have known quite a few who have had it.  Tell her she does not need to worry about it, REALLY....sounds like her doctor is taking good care of her

80% of people....men & women have this in their body. They now test when they do a PAP smear. If you ask the doctor, they will give you the lab results which will print out what strains of the virus she has. (I mean if she asks the doctor). She could have the strain that causes genital warts, or the strain that causes cancer. From there the doctor will determine how often she needs to be seen and have repeat testing. Typically if the test (every 6 months) shows the same level for 2 years, they will do a LEAP, which is cutting and cauterizing the cervical hole....where the cells originate, hoping to capture it all.
