danny chen, a 19 yr old army private committed suicide after being hazed by an army sgt... he was dragged across the ground on his bare skin, kicked, pelted with rocks, was called racial slurs that were announced over a loud speaker, and was made to sleep on the floor...

the sgt.'s attorney stated that chen slept while on duty and that the sgt was angry with him/ his performance...

wth???

Soldier said he endured slurs from sergeant charged in death

I agree, there are much more appropriate ways to reprimand/punish a soldier for infractions.

i do understand that but to deliberately beat and physically/ verbally taunt a person like that is wrong...thats why he's being reprimanded and charged with murder...im sure the dead officer knew that he wasn't going to the boy scouts ...nor did he think he'd be treated like that

may he rest in peace

Quoting EireLass:

It's not the boy scouts.

Okay Chen didn't follow procedure it didn't call for the treatment he recieved.  I hope the negligent homicide charges stick

How horrible. I don't care if he slept on duty, that did not give the Sgt. the right to beat him, humiliate him and so on.

That poor guys family!

Our country is going to hell in a hand basket is all I can say.

I understand that this was uncalled for, however army privates, especially during basic are subjected to pretty harsh treatment in order to see how they react under pressure.  My friend's son was subjected to a beating, kept in a hot box, and some other things in the name of training for if he was captured.  This was in the air force, and he was white.  The sgts. use whatever they can, some of it may not be for public consumption.  I do have great sympathy for this army private, I will soon have a son who will probably get similiar treatment, (he plans to go in the army) not because he is a diferent race, but because he is careless and will have similiar repercussions.  I know this is politically incorrect, but the military is a different world and the kid didn't get this treatment because of his race, he got it because he fell asleep and could jeopardize his army brothers in the field.
