catapult needed to launch last clingy nestling
Hi all - I retired from teaching high school science a year ago. I have 5 adult kids with one son still living at home. 3 Kids are married and we have 1 grandson. All live nearby (Reno). I need help launching our 22 almost 23 year old son with Aspergers into life. At the same time I have been searching for a new passion, preferably a paying job...any ideas?

Hi, Kathie. About finding a new passion, is there anything that you've wanted to do, but never had the time for it? When my daughter (and granddaughter) moved out, I decided I was going to start quilting. And I absolutely love it! I also wanted to do some travelling (I've done a little, but not as much as I'd hoped), and cooking classes - it's taken me a few years (seven), but I've recently started going to some cooking lecture classes at my local Whole Foods market. And I've been eating healthier, so I've been researching healthy replacements for all of my tried and true recipes. Also, my grandkids are now 8, 6, and (almost 4 - on Saturday), and I've been teaching them how to do some cooking (little one does help - he crumbles cheese for salads, he adds fruit to dishes, helps with measuring, etc.). I've found new ways to spend my time!!!
About your son, I don't know what to tell you. Is he capable of living on his own? I have a nephew that has some developmental problems. He's 31 years old now, he will never be able to live by himself, he'll never be able to drive, but he has a job that he's had for a few years now. He lives in a residential home that is set up for a few (maybe 3 or 4) adult males with developmental or physical disabilities. I'm not sure how my sister and BIL found this home, but if this sounds like something he'd benefit from, I will certainly ask my sister for some advice on it. He's lived in a couple of homes like that, for probably the past 10 years, maybe longer.
Oh that sounds great - where does your nephew live? I would love to know how the group found each other. Jake does drive, he just doesn't seem to need the company of others. What kind of job does your nephew have? Please talk to your sister - I just don't know where to start.
Wish I had some advice on launching you youngest but unfortunatly I don't.
AS far as a new passion goes, try something you have always wanted to but never had the time to when the kids were young or take something you love doing and figure out a way to profit from it.
I will talk to her. They live in north central Wisconsin. I believe he's working as an assembler, but I'm not sure what kind of product he assembles. He's very good w/ routine things, so I'm sure this is a great job for him!
It's too late to call her tonight (she works evenings), but I will tomorrow right after work.

Welcome to the group, Kathi. As for your passion, what hobbies/talents do you have that might work into a paying position. With your science background, you may be able to get a job at a museum or aquarium if there is one near where you live.
