"While most Americans plan to stick to traditions — 65 percent will take their significant other to dinner, 38 percent will give chocolates, and 37 percent will give flowers — our survey suggests it may be time to consider a less predictable Valentine’s Day gift,” says Charles Tran, founder of CreditDonkey.com.
Here's quick run-down of what Americans plan to give for Valentine's, and what they hope to receive:
- Sixty-five percent plan to give dinner, but only 49 percent want to receive dinner.
- Thirty-eight percent plan to give chocolates, but only 30 percent want to receive chocolates.
- Thirty-seven percent plan to give flowers, but only 20 percent want to receive flowers.
- Only 8 percent plan to give gift cards, but 15 percent want to receive gift cards.
- Only 7 percent plan to give electronics, but 20 percent want to receive electronics.
- Only 5 percent plan to give a trip, but 9 percent want to receive a trip.
This disconnect may explain why CreditDonkey researchers found that only slightly more than half (58 percent) of Americans plan to celebrate St. Valentine's Day at all this year.

I like it when he gets me the stuff I point out to him in stores or antique shops. It is always a nice surprise when he goes back and gets me something I liked but didn't buy. That shows he pays attention and wants to please me by going back and getting it! It doesn't really matter how expensive or traditional it is!
I am not into Valentine's Day at all. It is a contrived event to guilt people into buying flowers, cards, gifts, chocolates, whatever. We used to go out for dinner years ago, but the restaurants are always so crowded, so service isn't good, and there is nothing romantic about sitting in a crowded restaurant with a whole whack of other couples.
We have for the last umpteen years gone on a weekend trip usually to a casino which is always great fun. Usually he will have flowers waiting in the room for me, even though we always say the trip is the gift to both of us from both of us and no other gift is necessary. I'm thinking that this year we are going to Northern Quest casino over by Spokane.
Since Valentines Day is our anniversary its specila to us anyway. But this year is our tenth and we really wanted to go somewhere nice and renew our vows. But he couldn't schedule time off and with Kali in school its just hard to get away. But we may just go for an overnight stay at a B&B somewhere close over the weekend.
And Larry is pretty good at getting me something special and we don't go for exspensive,it can come from the dollar store, but if we know the other will like it,thats what matters.
And I always doing something special for the kids too. To me it just a special day to show a little extra love to those you care about.Either by giving a present or by doing something with them or for them.
I just posted trip because we'll be in Florida for Valentines day. Otherwise I really don't want a thing. :) well, maybe a card...lol
Since I am alone, my valentine's days expectations are over. I usually get everyone in my family a cute valentine card - always something silly. It is just fun.
