Weve been without electricity since Monday @11:00am. Ice storm in Maine. Geez, you don't think about how electrified your life is, until it isnt!
Tuesday we went out and bought a generator. 6000. But of course we had to pick and choose what to hook up....what were the real necessities. He's an electrician, so it was easy for him to install the transfer switch, etc. Furnace so we could have hot water. Water pump so we could have water. Refrigerator. Pellet stove, as we don't heat with our furnace. We have a couple plugs here and there, so we do have coffee in the morning, and can charge our computers and cell phones. But really no we do the flashlights and candles in the evenings. No tv. We keep blowing a fuse in the pellet stove, so I think we'll unplug the furnace and only heat that water in the morning for showers. No stove.
It's 17 degrees and snowing.

We don't have to worry about that anymore, we live in FL and have a whole house generator. Expensive, but worth it. We were able to use bonus money to get it bought, installed, the gas paid for. We filled it up when we first got it several years ago, and still won't need any for a year, barring any outtages and an increased use. It does always use a little because it automatically tests itself for about 20 minutes once a week. I wish we'd had it in the hurricanes of '04, but we couldn't have afforded it then. It was after going through them that we committed the next bonus money to getting a unit. Good Luck and I hope your electric comes back soon, and I'm glad you have SOMETHING at least.
