I don't know what else to call them - except they're the songs your mother or grandmother sang to you when YOU were a child. Probably can't find them in any book, certainly not a record. Maybe you can find some version of the lyrics on line........maybe. Or maybe the WERE popular songs waaaaaaaaaay back when.
So go ahead, serenade us with your songs.
Here's one I remember from mom - believe it or not, it was written in 1900! I sing it to my daughter still
She's only a bird in a gilded cage,
A beautiful sight to see.
You may think she's happy and free from care,
She's not, though she seems to be.
'Tis sad when you think of her wasted life
For youth cannot mate with age;
And her beauty was sold
for an old man's gold,
She's a bird in a gilded cage."

The Little Skunk's Hole
Tune: Turkey In the Straw
Written By: Unknown

In the little skunk's hole
And the little skunk said,
"Well, bless my soul!
Take it out! Take it out!
Take it out! Remove it!"
Oh, I didn't take it out
And the little skunk said
"If you don't take it out,
You'll wish you had,
Take it out! Take it out!"
Pheew! I removed it!
I've seen lots of versions of this song - here's the one I learned
Grandma's in the cellar. Lordy can't you smell her
Baking bisquits on that darned old dirty stove?
In her eye there is some matter,
That keeps drippin in the batter,
and she whistles while the (sniff) runs down her nose.
Down her nose, (repeat), down her nose (repeat)
In her eye there is some matter,
That keeps drippin in the batter,
and she whistles while the (sniff) runs down her nose.
You know I remember a lot about my childhood but one thing I don't is my mom singing to us. I know she did but couldn't tell you the songs..
i dont remember my mom singing to me....but i do remember us doing miss mary mack, or miss lucy had a steamboat....remember those??
There's a lonely little robin in a tree by my door
And it waits for it's mate to return evermore
So remember, please remember, that I'm lonely too
Like the lonely little robin I'm waiting for you
I walk down the lane down the lane we used to walk
Where we strolled together for years
And my cheeks are red, as it's hard for me to tell
If raindrops are falling my dear.
There's a lonely little robin in a tree by my door
And it waits for it's mate to return evermore
So remember, please remember, that I'm lonely too
Like the lonely little robin I'm waiting for you.
1951 - Jim Ed Brown
