I have a Grandaughter who is 11 and even through she is the apple of my eye, she is extremely over weight. Anyway her mom ( my daughter ) just finally realizied the problem and wants to do something about it. Thank God because Ive been worried to death about her health and happiness. So I was just wondering if anyone has actually dealt with childhood obesity and will she loose weight with just a diet and exercise change. Does anyone have any success storys about how there child lost weight. We know the basics but anything else will be helpful.
My child is 10 and extremly over weight. Part of it is due to medication he is taking which will be dealt with it. If it is just the diet that is causing it than changing her to healthy foods will definatly help.
If your not positively sure it's just diet you might want to give her pediatrition a call and talk to them. They actually also tested my sons theriod. We are completely switching his diet over to all healthy, no junk.
never dealt... but I would think the best way to go about it is to make it a family affair. No need to really say much other than the "family" is making changes. Stop buying ALL sodas, juices (or water them down), chips, crackers, granola bars, fruit snacks, etc... what ever is in the house that is junk. THE WHOLE FAMILY needs to change. And if she isnt in a sport... then FAMILY walks.
I think if you make just her diet then you will do more mental harm than good.
Besides, if there isnt a medical reason for her to be over weight then it is lifestyle, and if it is lifestyle then it is hard to imagine that she is the only one who is over weight in the family. ??? So it may be good for everyone.
No...sorry. None of my kids have ever been overweight and I encourage turning off the TV...and playing outside. I'm active too...so this works for me.

this is so true... they have to make changes in the home..lifestyle changes...cooking healthier, no fast foods, maybe once in a while as a treat thats it.... exercising together.. (walking) riding bikes, rollerskating things like that.......get her moving.....
One of my sister's girls was overweight as a child. She had a problem with hiding and sneaking food. My sister, in a very positive way, helped her find other interests besides food and my niece even learned that exercise can fun.
No I haven't, but I would think a sensible meal and exercise should do the trick, especially if it's made to be fun for all. I would also see the pediatrician and get what advice they have. The weight thing could also be something medical...just a thought.

Great Advice!!! It is important to realize it is a family issue.
I would suggest that your granddaughter be included in the process. Make it fun. Maybe have her help plan and prepare meals, help organize outtings with family.
yep..i agree
