Also, do you get mice in the winter??? If you do you know those fancy traps that slide around to trap the mouse as the trap is sprung so you don't have to see or handle the dead mouse... I made a more inexpensive trap.

Take a normal trap (you can usually find them in a bag of 4 for a buck - the wood kind with the metal spring thingie) and glue it to the center of a paper plate with Super Glue. Load the trap and place where you know your mouse travels. Then wait.

The paper plate will give you something other than the trap to grasp when you need to throw it away... granted you still have to see the poor thing... but at least you won't have to get close to touching it.

Keep a solution of weak black tea in a spray bottle to use to spritz down your mattress weekly.  Allow it to dry, then vacuum the mattress. The tannins in the tea denatures the proteins dust mites feed on and they die.  Great for sensitive skin and asthma sufferers.

Listerine original (or the generic equivalent) also drives fleas away.  Keep a solution of half Listering half water in a spray bottle by the door and spritz your pet down before and after being outside.  The fleas hate the smell and will avoid your pet.

for non-preggo people- you can instantly soothe a burn by crushing an aspirin and mixing with water to form a paste. put it on the burn (like if you burn yourself on the stove, i'm not talking catching your arm on fire!) works much faster then just taking an aspirin. after it dries, put some aloe on it.

we use a half and half mixture of vinegar and water clean our dog's ears. when she was younger, she got close to getting an infection, and after one day of soaking a  cotton ball and cleaning them out, she was back to normal! no AB's!

you can also use alka-seltzer tabs to clean your sink drains- routine cleanings, mind you! just pop a couple out and set in the drain, then pour vinegar over them slowly to dissolve. then rinse with hot water.

also, you can use toothpaste to smooth out your headlights- you know how they get all scratchy after a while? instead of buying an expensive kit of buffing pads, you can use any toothpaste that is a paste (not gel) and is basically just a plain baking soda toothpaste. just wipe on with a soft, clean cloth and water, and buff out the scratches. then rinse well! i wish i had taken pictures of our jeep headlights when hubby did this, it works well!

About those drains...You can use 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup plain table salt, put that down the drain, pour 1/2 cup white vinegar over it, let it fizz away for a bit, then follow with a pot of boiling water.  This will clear out the trap.

White vinegar can be used instead of fabric softener.  Just put in 1/2 cup when you'd put in the softener (or put it into the softener dispenser) and add a few drops of lavender or another nice-smelling essential oil if you want to.  The vinegar smell doesn't stick after the wash is dried.

Dried lavender buds are a natural moth repellent.

1 tablespoon baking soda and1 tablespoon lemon juice in 1 quart of water in a spray bottle is every bit as good as Febreeze.  Spray it, let it dry, vacuum.

A 99 cent 2-liter bottle of generic cola will clean your toilet.  Pour it on in there, be sure you get under the rim, let it sit for a few hours or even overnight if nobody's going to be using that toilet, and then scrub with the toilet brush and Bingo!  Great for the pregnant people who can't stand the fumes.

Every so often, run your clothes washer with hot water and 2 cups white vinegar, no clothes.  This will clean the lime scale out of the machine's system.

Save your banana peels and avocado skins.  The banana peel can be used as a cheap mild skin peel; just rub the insides of the peels on your face and neck and chest.  The avocado skins can be used the same way as a moisturizer.

Keep dry milk in the house.  It keeps well, can be used in baking without sacrificing results and a half-cup in the bath is a wonderful treat for really cheap.

DO NOT:  Mash up bananas and try to use it as hair conditioner.  Just don't, trust me.
