How do I find a social skills group?

Posted by   + Show Post

I have seen it suggested that kids with aspergers join a social skills group. How do I go about finding one for my 14 year old son and how do I make him go? I think he would be pretty self conscious about it and I don't want to make his self esteem any worse.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We are new settled in Vegas. I have asked around and found some good resources. Now, my hurdle is getting my son to be willing to do it. He really is a very typical teen in that he thinks I overreact to things and that he doesn't need help with anything. He seems content to just hang out by himself on the weekends. He isn't unhappy so I've just let him be for now. My concern is that his lack of social polish will really affect him when it comes time for him to look for a job and live on his own when he goes to college. He is a 100% mainstreamed sophomore and says he talks to other kids at school, so he does function well enough there. I guess my challenge now is learning when to step in and when to leave him alone.

My son is in social skills group and has been for past few years. He loves it! We had found ours through our local autism support group

My son participated in social skills groups at school.  His Autism Specialist in high school had a group that was great.  Check with your school and see what they offer.
