Toddlers + Blinds = DEATH! :*-( ~piog~

I posted this story about my daughter in another group & was asked by another member if I could share it in here, since it would then reach more mommies.  I hope that you ladies don't mind me joining today & sharing this with you!

July 7th 2010 was a typical day in my household.  Around 1:00 pm I laid Kaylee down for a nap in her crib.  Kaylee is 15 months old.  She is beautiful, sweet, smart, fun, active, and absolutely perfect in every way.  About 3 weeks ago I noticed that Kaylee could just barely reach the bottom of the blinds on the window above her crib.  So, (as any mother should) I wrapped the blind cord up into the top of the blinds to secure her safety.  Of course, as I laid her down for her nap this past wednesday, I assumed she was safe as could be.  Kaylee's nap time routine has been consistant for months.  She is VERY curious & has discovered that when she is in one room, there might possibly be something happening in another.  So, as I lay her down for naps, it is not unusual that she fusses for 15 - 20 minutes.  But, after that initual few minutes, she decides that she is tired & goes to sleep.  July 7th was no different then any other day.  I layed her down & she fussed.  After about twenty minutes.......  silence.  I thought to myself "Thank God she's sleeping, now I have time to myself!"

About  3 minutes later, my wonderful 6 year old son says to me "Mama, I'm gonna go check on Kaylee."   NEVER in the past has Joey been concerned much about what Kaylee is doing.  He's a 6 year old boy.  What so fun about a little baby who takes all of mommy's attention?  She drools, bites, cries, poops ETC.......  So, for Joey, taking interest in Kaylee seemed cute to me!  So, I said "ok, buddy, let me know if she' sleeping."

10 seconds later Joey screams (in the most horrifying voice i've EVER heard)  "MOMMYYYY!!!!!!"  My heart stopped & I ran!  What I saw was nothing less than TERRIFYING!  My baby girl was hanging from the blinds, which were wrapped around her neck over & over again!  She was still breathing, but with a raspy voice says "Mama, My pretty's stuck."

To a 15 month old girl, ANYTHING that can be wrapped around her neck is a "pretty".  I screamed for Joey to bring me scissors as I held Kaylee up so that the cord wouldn't tighten anymore.  My 18 year old cousin came running & held Kaylee's hands & face away so that I could cut the blind cords off of Kaylee's neck.   Kaylee & the rest of us took a giant sigh of relief!!

Upon inspection of my blinds, I discovered that The cords that were wrapped around Kaylee's neck were NOT the ones that get pulled on to put blinds up & down.  (I had wrapped those too high & out of her reach).  The cords that were wrapped around her neck came from the tiny strings that go through the holes of each individual blind.  She had pulled the plastic piece off of the bottom of the blinds & gained access to the thinner cords of the blind.

When I think about the events that led up to Kaylee surviving this terrible accident, I realize how close I was to losing one of my most precious & valuable things in my life!

As moms, we take precautions & purchase "safety" locks & gates & wrap up blind cords & put boiling pots of water on the back burner of the stove..............  The list goes on!

I'm POSITIVE that EVERY mom has scarey stories like these to tell!  No matter HOW cautious & paranoid we are..........  These things still happen!

I'm at a loss for words here......  Was there MORE precautions I could have taken?  ABSOLUTELY!  Do I feel like an IDIOT for not just moving her crib away from the wall, so ALL of the blinds were out of her reach?  OF COURSE!

I think of the millions of children who have been in similar situations & had their lives ended too soon!  I think of THIER MOTHER'S who have to live with that guilt FOREVER!  The thoughts "Had I only moved the crib, or tied up the cords, or checked on her sooner!  ETC.... ETC....  ETC.....

Please.......  If you have blinds in your home....  Keep EVERY INCH of thise blinds out of reach of your children!  NOT JUST THE PULL CORDS!

~*THANK YOU LORD FOR MY PRECIOUS & BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN*~

I did some research & discovered that "inner blind cords" are known to be DANGEROUS & have cause many deaths!  I NEVER KNEW THIS!  I regretably admit that I am often one of those moms who think "That won't happen to me/my child!"   I WAS WRONG!  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pass this on to other moms, grandmas, babysitters, ETC.....  Let's all help prevent this from happening to more children!

http://www.youtube.com/user/pfwbs  <------  PASS THIS ON!!!  PLEASE!

P.S.  I was asked in another group "Why would you put her crib by a window?"  So, I figured i'd answer that question here, to avoid any conflict.

My Answer:

My bedroom (the room her crib is in) is in the basement, which means that the windows are high up.  The windows are only 12 inches tall.  So, for the LONGEST time, Kaylee wouldn't even come CLOSE to reaching them.  A month ago, when I noticed that she could just barely reach the bottom of the blinds, I wrapped the cords up (out of her reach)  ASSUMING that the bottom 1/2 an inch that she COULD reach of the blinds was "safe"!  Honest to GOD, i've NEVER heard that the "inner cords" were dangerous!  ODVIOUSLY i'd NEVER intentionally put her in harms way!  Which is EXACTLY the reason I posted this!  TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF THE INNER CORDS!

PLEASE understand that when you see the look of PURE terror in your child's eyes & you realize that what is happening COULD HAVE been avoided, you run a MILLION questions through your head :  "Why didn't I move the crib?  Why am I so stupid?  Why didn't I take the blinds down?"  The guilt of the situation & the look on her face will FOREVER haunt me!  PLEASE don't assume that YOUR "common sense" will be the same as mine!  After all.....  If ALL moms knew ALL safety hazards, we'd have FAR LESS accidents!

So scary!

This is the very reason why I am against separate sleeping quarters or leaving toddlers alone for any reason.   You never know what they can get into!     I'm looked at crosseyed for wearing my baby safely and properly on my back to do chores or bringing her room to room with me to play on the floor if its a safe room.   If she falls asleep or not I know where she is.

Your son was the hero here!
