4 Year Old with Constipation and Recent Bed Wetting and Accidents

Hi!

My 4 year old son has been petty trained for 2 years. He has been night trained for a long time and has been out of pull ups for months. Every once in a while he would have an accident because he was so engrossed in what he is doing. But in those instances there would be just a small wet spot in his underwear and he would make it to the bathroom in time to finish. However, the last 3 nights he has full on wet the bed in the morning and had a full on accident today in his pants. He recently gave up his binky which has been pretty traumatic for him. He just had a meltdown 2 nights ago saying how sad he was that he no longer has his binkies. Not sure if I am underestimating the emotional and psychological impact this may be having on him.

Just to be safe, I brought him to the doctor yesterday and was able to rule out Diabetes and an Infection. They are referring me to a GI specialist because they have found children who suffer from constipation (he has been suffering since he has been 1 1/2 years old) often exhibit these symptoms. And since we have been dealing with this issue for such a long time and with the little effect Miralax has had on the issu,e they think it is best to be seen by a specialist.

Has anyone had any similar experiences like this and what did you find the problem was and what made it better?

Thanks in advance!

I have seen kids have a problem with constipation and bedwetting when they are withholding.  It is like they try to hold their poop and pee as long as possible.

It could be physical.  But for some kids taking away the binky is truly emotional!

No clue. My almost 4 year old is having the same issues with wetting himself a bit because he doesn't want to stop and go.
And he's still in pull ups at night

Thanks for all your responses. So far he hasn't had anymore accidents but he has an appt. With the GI specialist on May 3rd. I will let you know what he says. I am afraid they are going to want to do a Lower Endoscopy with Biopsies which will require him to go under anesthesia. I'm not trying to get ahead of myself but it is hard not to!

My 5 year old son still has problems because he is a deep sleeper.

I'm sorry.  I know how scary going to the GI can be.  My son has been there and the GI was almost positive he had cystic fibrosis.  Thankfully he didn't.  He was allergic to grapes!
