When do you stop giving Goody Bags?

I am in the middle of planning my son's 9th Birthday party. Its going to be a bit bigger than normal since he now has friends from 2 different schools he wants to invite and Hubby and I are REALLY on a strict budget.  I was budgeting for plates, napkins, and some decorations (I only get 16 designer plates adn 16 desert plates to go with the theme everything else is plain) When I started talking about Goody Bags Hubby stops and says "Isn't he getting too old for that?" I was puzzled figured I had a good year before worrying about him being too old. Now I don't know. If I shouldn't that would save so much money (even if I buy stuff at the $1 store) and I try not to give candy due to the fact my kids aren't allowed anything with Red 40, Yellow 5.  What should I do?

Well piñatas are good at that age. Not sure what to fill it with. I'm sure if there wasn't goody bags they wouldn't be missed.

We don't really do 'goody bags' as the kids get older....but we do give things out at the end of their parties.  If we do an evening/night party - we get glow necklaces and/or bracelets for everyone.  If it is a 'themed' party - we get a little something related to the theme to give out....often we use the items as table decorations during the party and tell the kids to take them when they leave.

No way will I do a pinata with the kids I know that are coming LOL  That would be total distruction and chaos putting a stick or bat in some of those kids hands LOL

Go to Oreintal Trading Company's website...they have TONS of dino-stuff that you buy in 'bulk' (usually packs of 12) and they aren't over-priced.  Use that stuff on the table - then let the kids take them home.  OTC has things like 'dino eggs' and all types of inexpensive dino stuff (I should know as my older son has been a dino-freak for years now).

I use Oriental trading all the time but we are REALLY strapped for money this year so I really can[t see buying anything off there. I know there stuff comes in bulk but its somewhat pricy once it all adds up even with all the "Free" shipping codes I get.  I will play it by ear if I have some extra cash I will go to the $1 and buy figurines from there.

To save money, I always did one theme decoration, then color coordinate plates & utensils from Dollar Tree.

I would forgo goodie bags, but replace them with a single item such as keeper water bottles, etc.  This time of year Walmart clearance is great for these kind of items.  Also try Oriental Trading Co.

What is your theme?
