People's Choice Award Nominations Show Kids Today Have No Taste
Posted by Linda Sharps on November 9, 2011

Awards season is once again starting to shift into high gear, and the first of the bunch is the People's Choice Awards, scheduled right before the Golden Globes. On January 11, 2012, hundreds of stars will descend upon the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles in order to recognize the work and people that make up today's popular culture.

In other words, this awards show isn't really about talent or artistry: it's about popularity, full stop. Which might explain why Transformers: Dark of the Moon has been nominated in the Favorite Movie category.

Because people have terrible taste.

The nominations are in for the 38th annual People's Choice event, and the list is heavily skewed towards Harry Potter and Katy Perry, proving that this particular voting audience is super young and just adorable.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 earned a whopping nine nominations, including Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie, Favorite Actor (Daniel Radcliffe), Favorite Movie Star Under 25 (Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, Emma Watson), Favorite Ensemble Movie Cast, and Favorite Book Adaptation. Perry followed closely behind with seven nods, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song of the Year ("E.T."), Favorite Pop Artist, Favorite Animated Movie Voice (The Smurfs), and Favorite Music Video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)."

Okay, two things: there's a Favorite Animated Voice category? And out of that category, people chose
The Smurfs?

I'm also a little mystified by the overwhelming Katy Perry love. You guys, have you ever seen her in the same room with Zooey Deschanel?
Think about it.

Given the demographics, I'm not surprised to see that
Glee is also wildly popular among the People's Choice voters, having racked up seven nominations including Favorite TV Guest Star (Gwyneth Paltrow) (... really). Other Favorite Movie nominees include Bridesmaids, Fast Five, X-Men: First Class, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and the aforementioned Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

I seriously just rented that Transformer flick two nights ago and I can understand it being honored with Favorite Special Effects or Favorite Gratuitous Shot of Whatshername's Ass in a Tight White Dress, but Favorite Movie? OUT OF A WHOLE YEAR'S WORTH OF MOVIES? Man, kids these days.

In the music categories, the The Song of the Year nominations includes
Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory," Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger," and Katy Perry's "E.T."

I don't know what would be more depressing: for the 2011 song of the year to be something created by Adam effing Levine ... or this:

Dancing hamsters with suspect bulges in their pants. People, your choices are awful.

No.  Awards shows bore me to tears!  I'm so out of it, I've never heard of half the nominees anyway.
