Food stamps not being used to purchase "JUNK FOOD"? Our government is talking about putting a ban on junk food and theyll be making a list of items that can not be purchased by food stamps......Well, I admit ive seen some people who have just bought junk food with their food stamps, and load up on sodas and chips, and thats not everyone. But, I think there should be limitations and amounts you can buy, instead of taking it away...what do you think about our goverment banning junk food?
UPDATE!!!! I was reading my local news yesterday when i came across this story. I live in the tampa bay area Florida and apparently our senator wants to pass this bill. The federal goverment has to give them a waiver in order for this to happen.....And i think personally itll on be chips, sodas, and cookies. I dont think its gonna be other items....I hope they dont go crazy over this.
I'm torn on it. What would they consider junk food? I get the obvious: chips, soda, candy...but would they think that chicken nuggets, popcorn, mac & cheese is junk food? Some people think that way. Limitations on it sounds like a better option. I have seen people load up on crap (chips, soda, cookies, ice cream, "energy" drinks, etc) and can't believe that my tax dollars are going for that instead of food that actually has nutritional value.
I get WIC for DD and they tell me what I can/can't get with the checks. That to me makes sense, it helps me to make sure that she is getting what she needs.
Good topic!
I think its more about junk food...chips sodas, candies......but when it comes to the goverment i think were gonna see a big turn around.....it might be set up like wic....and it should be. with limitations of course. and ive known some people to abuse it...and thats what it has come down too. im torn a little....but, you are right, our tax dollars are being used for them to have..."junk food".
What pisses me off the most is that we make about $200 too much a month to get any food stamps, so we don't waste what little money we have on junk, we get the essentials (protein, veggies, fruits) but these idiots are out wasting what they get. I knew someone that was getting over $1200 a month! She spent most of it on chips, soda, Monster drinks, ice cream...If I were getting it, I would spend most of mine on proteins, veggies and fruits. The most I ever saw them eat in fruit was bananas. I don't think they know what a veggie is, or what plain water tastes like. (Sorry, it really annoys me, lol).
Limitations is the way to go...but I highly doubt the government will listen to us.
I think limitations in place would be good, like WIC. But I know that they shouldn't be punished bc they are on assistance. And if they want to include nuggets/macncheese/pizza/hotdogs in their menus, they should be able to. But chips, sodas, energy drinks, ice cream, candy...etc should be bought with their own monies. It will be interesting to see what is considered 'junk food'
Although it sounds like a good idea, the govt really should tell us how to eat. We are all grown adults that know we should eat healthy. The bad part of the whole thing is that junk food is actually cheaper than food that is good for you. So they can make the dollar strech more. RAMEN and boxed Mac and Cheese would be considered junk food in my book. Then again. If you ban soda, maybe let them buy some damn toilet paper with the FS.
Junk food (candy, cookies, cake, soda, chips....the stuff with little to no nutritional value at all) are all luxury items.
You don't NEED them to be healthy. When money is tight for the grocery budget those items are struck from our list.
If you NEED government assistance to feed your family then yes, those items should be struck from your list as well.
I have no problem with them banning junk food (chips, soda, cookies, etc) from food stamps. I don't think things like mac and cheese and chicken nuggets should be banned though because they do have some (although very limited) nutritional value. Anything with 0 nutritional value should be banned. I also think there needs to be more educational resources for those on food stamps as to how to create healthy meals cheap.
I think that they shouldn't buy junk food with the money however if they are buying like hot dogs or hamburger or what not that is still junk food but that is also a way for the money to go further. When you don't have any money the further you can stretch it the better. If they are cutting out sodas, chips and candy then I say that is okay.
