Food stamps not being used to purchase "JUNK FOOD"? Our government is talking about putting a ban on junk food and theyll be making a list of items that can not be purchased by food stamps......Well, I admit ive seen some people who have just bought junk food with their food stamps, and load up on sodas and chips, and thats not everyone. But, I think there should be limitations and amounts you can buy, instead of taking it away...what do you think about our goverment banning junk food?

UPDATE!!!! I was reading my local news yesterday when i came across this story. I live in the tampa bay area Florida and apparently our senator wants to pass this bill. The federal goverment has to give them a waiver in order for this to happen.....And i think personally itll on be chips, sodas, and cookies. I dont think its gonna be other items....I hope they dont go crazy over this.

you accept money from them.. so as far as the money you get from them.. they have the right to tell you how it's spent.

(you being those that accept government assistance food stamps).

you have two choices.. take the money and deal with any bans they may place on certain food items, as it is their money they are giving you...

OR.. don't accept assistance at all..

Quoting mom2myprince:

Quoting jessi2girls:

the ban is mostly on snack junk foods

*they can tell you whatever the hell they want really.* ?????????????????????????????????

what is your problem.

Quoting mom2myprince:

how can they tell you what to buy with your FS card.

and what they think is junk food others might not.

I don't get any money from anyone but my *JOB*  ask before you ASSume.

i still dont think its right for anyone to tell someone how to feed there family what if the job that pays you started to tell you how to spend your pay check? whould you or anyone like that.

read what I wrote again before you ASSume.. right in red.. I noted that YOU means those who are on assistance... if it doesn't apply to you personally, then obviously it omits you.

BTW I'm earning the money from my job.. however..

look at it this way.. pretend the government is a bank.. you can apply for a loan, but it's their money and they have the right to tell you if you can buy ___ car or not.. if the car isn't worthy of the money, they won't allow you to purchase it for that cost.  They want assurance their money is going to be well spent.. the difference between a bank and FS though.. is at least you don't ahve to pay FS's back.

When you didn't EARN the money, and it's GIVEN to you.. then if they want to put stipulations on it, I see no problem with it.

yeah you keep telling yourself that OK. weirdo

it's okay.. you know I'm right.. or you'd come back with a better debate ; )

UMMM I have a Question for you where did I ever say I recieved aid to provide food for my family??????? I know alot of families that do and I am a advocate for low income people. You complain about soda and chips but the very same govenment takes taxes out of our  paychecks and spend it on things without telling us nobody complains about that. But ya'll worried about money that is being taken from you every week and at the end of the year for taxes where you know exactly where it is going. Which is the chips and soda that ya'll complain about. But money not accounted for that the govenment is using you don't say a word like the people in office gets paid by the money WE work for is paying these good saleries to people in office.Alotof times they take that money and buy expensive clothes, shoes, trips aroundthe world, WHORES and escorts drugs and liqour. So since you complain about food why don't you complain about educational grants and so on. I read how some of you mothers complain that you made the child so take care of them....which is true so that means why have loans why have grants if people should have their own money to put their kids through school. Please worry about more serious things like your cheating husbands. Have several seats.GOODBYE

Quoting jessi2girls:

I'm not telling you what to buy for your household either.. just that you aren't using my money to buy snacks for your family or the governments money..

use your own, or bake your own snacks...that simple.

We aren't telling you what to buy.. just not to spend taxpayers and government money on it.  That simple.

BTW YOU enrolled in the program.. so if you don't like the program.. you have the option to opt out of it.. you still have all your freedoms..

we could always close the program all together..if you want to get that pisssed off about the program and no longer want it..

Quoting shymystic:

Nobody is telling you rich people what to buy for your households so why are you so concerned about people who recieve aid during these hard times...put yourselves in other poeple shoes here in CT where I live people are allowed to use food stamps at stores like WholeFoods and farmer's markets on the street that sell farm-raised or organic products. FOOD STAMPS AKA SNAP RECIEPIENTS DON'T TELL YOU WHAT TO BUY SO DON'T TELL THEM WHAT TO BUY...IF THAT'S THE CASE DON'T ALLOW THE YOUR STATE TO RECIEVE FOODSTAMPS AND SEE HOW FAR YOU WILL GET OUT IN YOUR POLITICAL OFFICE...AND SEE WHERE YOU WILL GET DURING ELECTION DAY.

this person who ever she is thinks she above everyone who gets FS.

LMAO.. it's not like I'm hiding who I am.. names Jessi.. and there's my pic.. lol.. can't say the same for some of you though lol. and no, I don't think I'm above everyone who gets FS..

I just think people who bitch about the hand that feeds them are hypocrites and I don't mind calling someone something as I see it.

SO YOU THINK BECAUSE I HAD A HEART VALVE TRANSPLANT, AND THAT MY HUSBAND WAS ON DEATHS DOOR... I DON'T DESERVE A SODA????? So, if a family is broke and their child is dying, by your school of thought, that child doesn't deserve a trip to Disney though make a wish. You would also have to say a cancer patient who has exhausted all of their money on treatment doesn't deserve a soda sometimes. IN YOUR OPINION, DO YOU THINK BECAUSE WE HAD MEDICAL PROBLEMS THAT COST US EVERYTHING, THAT WE SHOULD HAVE A  MEGER PORTION OF BREAD AND WATER?????

You pompous arrogant excuse of a person. I will do anything and everything to help others... even those I don't know. Since we've gotten back on our feet, I've donated an entire living room set to fire victimes, allowed a family to stay in my home when they were evacuated during the TX fires, made food for those who were ill even if I did not feel up to it, and donated a great deal of clothes when someone else needed some for their growing child. Thankfully we will never be crossing paths, because God forbid you ever seek help for anything... I might be inclined to tell you that you don't deserve it!

Quoting amandahlavacek:

So because you have a heart problem, and your husband was in a coma you feel you deserve soda. Yeah, because that makes a lot of sense

Quoting lilpep100:

Well, thank you for that. Let me spell it out for you... I had my 3rd open heart surgery, then 6 months later my husband was in a COMA from meningitis and I was told he may never wake. My heart problems were congenital, meaning I had them when I was born, so it was not from eating crap. I'm so very glad you have means to buy a treat with your own money, but again, I seriously couldn't even afford toilet paper. I hope to God you never have issues like that and have to go on food stamps, because I have to tell you honey, it's not at all humiliating to wait all day long to get assistance when just 5 short years before you graduate Magna Cum Laude from college and have a nice job. Savings can only carry you so long hon, and a year is better than most people can make it! Please do continue your crusade to be judgemental and tell people they don't deserve a soda or a piece of candy.... or that my disabled self needs to get off my rump and make it from scratch.

Quoting amandahlavacek:

Sure you can, if you can pay for it out of your own pocket. I drink water with dinner, or sometimes gatorade. And we dont buy the premade bottles, we buy the giant jugs of powder and mix it ourselves.

And someone earlier mentioned that soda was cheaper then water. I went to Walmart today and bought a 24 pack of bottled water for $4.98. And a 24 pack of Diet Mtn Dew for $5.98 (rollback) so dont tell me soda is cheaper then water

Quoting lilpep100:

I don't agree at all. I was hospitalized, and 6 months later DH was in a comma from meningitis. I couldn't afford anything including toilet paper. My kids couldn't do anything that required money, so we walked and went to the park. Now you guys have the nerve to tell me that during that depressing time in my life, I can't have a case of diet soda, or a bag of chips to go with the hot dogs? I bought fruit, veggies, and lean meats, but during that miserable time in my life it was nice to at least get a soda with dinner sometimes. Do you also want to tell me how wrong it was of me to buy cake mix to make my kids a birthday cake? Or how getting them a small amount of candy for their birthday was wrong since I couldn't afford a toy. Its NEVER your place to lay judgment. Put yourself in those shoes. I'm ashamed of done of those replies. You are the same people who think its ok to give a poor kid an ipod for Christmas, but not ok to ever have a treat. Can you say hypocrite?

I have no problem with them banning junk food (chips, soda, cookies, etc) from food stamps.  I don't think things like mac and cheese and chicken nuggets should be banned though because they do have some (although very limited) nutritional value.  Anything with 0 nutritional value should be banned.  I also think there needs to be more educational resources for those on food stamps as to how to create healthy meals cheap.

This exactly.

This is called the government diverting attention away from real issues and focusing way too much on non-issues. The sad reality is that most of what people would define as 'junk' food is also more affordable. When you have to choose between a .79 off brand of potato chip or 3.49 for the better for you 'whole grain' chip - and you have a limited income, which are you going to choose?

In this economy, with so many people struggling and out of work,, this kind of government nit-picking should cause outrage. Maybe the thing to do is punish those companies that outsourced everyone's JOBS (including mine) and do something definative and proactive in getting people back to work..?.

honistly i would be pissed not everyone that is on food stamps is overweight i am on food stamps and my daughter my mom and I are perfectly healthy we dont eat junk food but we do buy pop and chips they shouldent controle what we eat. If the mom that wants to feed their kids shit let them they are the one's that are going to suffer in the long run. I can admit im addicted to caffine so i go through a 12 case of pop a week and drink coffee all day long as well.
