Your thoughts on pregnant mothers who smoke, drink ect while pregnant

I smoked cigarettes prior to getting pregnant. I would smoke a pack a day, and I was addicted horribly to caffeine, consuming coffee, and energy drinks all day every day. The day i found out I was pregnant, I stopped both of those instantly. Sure I had some migraines and with drawls from both, but my developing baby was far to important to me, so I didn't touch either of those the entire pregnancy and while breastfeeding...

I know several females, who smoked cigarettes and weed while pregnant. Now I'm not posting this to bash them, but here is where i get confused...

This one mother, while pregnant smoke cigarettes and weed the entire pregnancy, once her baby was born, she continued to smoke both while breastfeeding. I was at her house one day visiting, ( dead of summer VERY hot)  she wanted to go outside to smoke a cigarette, she grabs a heavy thick winter house robe and puts it on to go out side and smoke. I asked what she was doing with the robe, she said that she puts a robe on to go out side and smoke her weed and or cigarette cause she doesn't want the "smell" of either smoke to get on her new born baby...

I was like WHAT?! I didn't say anything to her, I was just totally confused... Because she smoked both her entire pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and that gets into the babys blood stream/body, yet she wants to wear a robe so the "smell" doesnt get on him? So I guess she feels its safe to smoke them while pregnant and breastfeeding, but the smell ( in her eyes) is not safe?

Then another female I know of, is currently pregnant. She smoke cigarettes like a chimey. Yet she is totally against using a tanning bed while pregnant ( don't get me wrong, I wouldn't tan while pregnant either) but why is it that she feels totally ok with smoking while pregnant, but not tanning?

What are you thoughts on women who do things like this while pregnant?

I was also a vegetarian prior to being pregnant, but while I was pregnant, I forced myself to eat meat because I knew the protein was good for a developing baby. I mean I did everything I was supposed to do, and stayed healthy for my baby.

I think it's wrong to smoke while pregnant because it's detrimental to both mom and baby. And drinking more than what's occasionally allowed while pregnant is also a bad idea because of all the harm it causes. But like the above person said, to each their own.

From a medical standpoint, in choosing between formula feeding or a smoking mother to bf, it is actually recommend to bf.

Ideally, mom would not, but bm from a smoking mom is still recommended over formula.

I think if you are going to have a baby you need to be responsible enough to stop the crap. Take of your body and your babies.

I think they are selfish and weak. Possibly ignorant and in denial.

I smoked a pack a day before I got pregnant.  Quit as soon I found out and that was 6 years ago.  Never started back again.  (can't afford it!!)

I agree it's to each their own, but I don't get smoking while you are pregnant and breastfeeding,  yet you dont want the smell of smoke on your baby... just doesn't make since when its getting into their system from being in the womb while you smoked or while you breastfed, if they choose to smoke while pregnant, why even bother with trying to keep the smoke smell of their clothing?

I think its wrong and harmful to do it while pregnant and breastfeeding, not to mention selfish as all
