BMI graphing for 1st graders?????????

Posted by   + Show Post

I have 3 kids. They were all born w/in 27 months. My oldest DD (9 y/o) has a growth deficiency and is seeing a Endocrinologist to determine if steroid shots are necessary. Now my 7y/o DD is much bigger then her older sister. Shes only in 1st grade and is growing at a very healthy rate. My son was 2 months premature and now weighs exactly the same as his big sister (he's in KG). It goes w/o saying that my oldest DD makes her younger siblings look bigger because she's MUCH smaller. So last night I'm going through their back packs & I discovered the school had done a BMI chart on the students. My 1st grader is now classified over 85% & considered OVER WEIGHT. They TOLD HER THIS. She is a solid little girl & is certainly not over weight. There are no rolls or pudge's, and she fits in the average size clothes for her age. Shes the same size a few other girls in her class. There are "over weight" kids and it wouldn't hurt for health purposes to control their diets but not my little girl. She has now come to me with concerns and asked me if she was fat. I wanted to cry. She sees whats going on w/her sister and now has been told by the school that she's over weight. I'm horrified she's going to develop some eating or emotional issues now. WTF????? I've added 3 different photos so you can tell me yourself if I'm over reacting on a defensive note or if I'm right to be upset & worried about whats gonna happen to her because of this.

She's the one I'm holding.

Your child does not look overweight in any way. I wouldnt care if someone did a bmi check on my daughter at the dr or something....but to tell her the results is ridiculous. If they are concerned they should come to you. And than when you say you arent concerned they should drop it because they have no business doing otherwise. Since when do the schools take over the dr job? I would be mad.

I know this is another argument altogether, but I am getting so sick and tired of the government poking their noses into peoples lives. Mandatory bmi monitoring at school??

That's crazy! She looks normal and healthy. I would talk to the school. They shouldn't be putting these negative ideas into children's heads. Horrible. If they want to do tests fine, but don't tell the kids what the results are.

OMG!!! that school would have a piece of me......over weight???? where??? maybe her big toe?...MORONS!!!......if you want to see over weight then you should see my daughter, unfortunately she is even thou i know she is 95% taller that yu average 5 yr old, still it concerns me that she will grow to be on the "hefty side" the dr even told me that if she keeps growing like that, she'll be about 6"0 ft tall!!!!.......so no in any way you are overreacting, you must have a talk with the school ASAP! and stop that BS from them, this will definitely cause her a trauma and will send her through a pathe you do not want her to go......btw your kids are beatiful!!

Why is the school doimg this? Are they trying to cause problems? The point if school is to teach reading, writing, and math. They are not doctors
I would be raising hell with the school.

If she's overweight, my preschooler would be obese..

She is much bigger than her other two siblings but by no means is she overweight! She looks like a tall healthy little 7 year old. I would be livid if the school started weighing my children! You should talk to other parents about the situation & see if anyone else is concerned  & then speak with the school. I could see if she was huge for the school to be concerned but this is crazy!

She's no overweight, her school is full of a bunch of idiots. I grew like that, like a weed as my family said. I was never told I was overweight. You need to have a talk with her teachers and even get a doctors note telling them to shut up, they're not doctors, the school nurse isn't a doctor, and that your daughter is not overweight.
