36 Patriotic Baby Names

Posted by Kiri Blakeley

While old-fashioned baby names and new-fangled bizarro baby names are all the rage in Hollywood, one doesn't hear of too many patriotic baby names. Not unless Jack Osbourne named his daughter Pearl for Pearl Harbor. But in honor of the nation's birthday, July 4th, here is a patriot-themed baby name list. Keep in mind we did one last year and I am not repeating names (go over to that list if you want Justice, Liberty, and America). So if some of these names sound a bit quirky -- or downright idiotic -- hey, they're just suggestions.

I separated the names into male and female categories, but the trend now seems to be to switch them up. If you want to name your little girl Crockett, I can't stop you. Though I'd like to. As always, if you decide to give your tyke a name on this list, let me know. And happy Fourth of July!

Girls

Macy (Macy's fireworks)

Blue (not Beyonce -- red and white)

Harley (Davidson, a staunchly American company)

Betsy (Ross)

Firework (just an idea)

Freedom

Florida (first documented landing on U.S. soil)

Tea (Tea Party -- the Boston type)

Boston (Boston Tea Party)

September (11th)

Kennedy

Rosa (Parks)

Amelia (Earhart)

Betty (Grable, favorite World War II poster girl)

Isabella (Queen of Spain, who sent Columbus)

Disney (Walt)

Marina (Marines)

Country

More from The Stir: 7 Patriotic Quotes Perfect for Fourth of July

Boys

Washington

Hudson (River)

Columbus

Strype (stars and ... )

Marine

Army

Navy (Please ... no Air Force)

Seal (not the singer -- SEAL Team 6, the team that killed Osama)

Neil (Armstrong)

Elvis

Ellis (Island)

Ford (Henry)

Yosemite

Plymouth (Rock)

Crockett (Davy)

Sam (Uncle)

Vernon (Mount)

Luther (Martin)

No. Those are horrible names! Some of the girls names aren't too bad but I still would have never named my children any of them.

I actually like a lot of those names. I think Liberty would be a cool name for girl, too.

Love Amelia.... I guess that's why I named my daughter Ameilia.

I like Emelia, Rosa, and Isabella for a girl.  The only name I would even consider using for a boy from this list is sam.  The other names on this list are just weird.  I pitty the poor child who is named Yosemite.  All I could think of  when I saw that name was Yosemite Sam from Looney Tunes.

Um, what about girl names like Virginia (as in Virginia Dare the first baby born in the colonies)? What about Georgia? They are state names, but both of these states were part of the original 13 colonies.

Oh, and I had to edit this and add that the name Florida should not be on the list. Yes, the first colony of the New World was established in Florida. However, Florida was not part of the 13 colonies and no one from the colony of Florida had any say or influence with the Continental Congress and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Florida was still governed by the county of Spain.
