Ok, here it is. Is it just me or are alot of moms dropping off kids at the library and going to work or out to do erands and leaving kids to be babysat by the library. What if the kid gets hungry or thirsty? The kids are between 7-11. I can understand if the child is 16-18. They are old enough to go to the library as long as you have a set time and then show up early to see if they stay or is ducking out to do something else. 7-11 seems a little too young to be left at home alone and left at a library. Would you leave your child with babysitter if you knew they were a child predator? I am at the library and the mom does it every day not just once. She has an old daughter and could have the 18 yr daughter watch the 8 yr old but they leave the 8yr old to both go to work. I could hear them say here is some money and your dad will pick you up in 5hours. I know her hubby makes real good money. I meet them before. Any one else think I should tell someone?

what about 12-14? You skipped over them and yes my son can manage for 15-30 minutes at the library without me sitting there being bored off my arse. lol

Actually I sometimes leave to simply take a walk outside rather than just sit there. He knows not to leave and how to raise a stink if he's approached. Gotta give em some independence at somepoint.

no THIS MOM AND OLDER Sister 18 yrs old isn't leaving to go for a walk. One family I know leave the kid 8yr almost 9yr old leaves the kid at the library while she goes to work. Yes the work is only about 5miles away. But she leaves the kid to go get snacks and drinks and lunch on her own until Dad can pick her up. The Dad has a really good paying job. He makes lots of money the mom and daughter should have to work. But, They buy only the best shoes, clothes and lots of jewlery they show off. The daugther even could watch the little sister but doesn't. The policy isn't clear of what age to leave chlid alone. I do see other moms if they have 8yrs they read a book near by while the child plays on the computer. And a few other moms leave the child at the library for 2 hours while they go workout at the gym. They have childcare!

I have an 11 yr old and 9yr old and I take my kids to the library and stay at the library reading near by while my kids are reading and playing on the computer visting with friends. They have computers in the section and the adults use the same computer section as the kids, all the computers on in the middle of the library and the reading section is on the other side of the book shelve. They don't have a kid only section. I don't want my kids fo be alone at the library or movie theaters alone at this age and my kids want to know why the other famiy lets their kids go alone at 8 and plus. Does anyone let there kids go to the movies with friends at age 8 or go to the library alone? Am I over protective as my kids say or do you agree with me?

Our library has a policy no one under 12 without a parent. I think a lot of kids use it as aftercare..

People do it all the time at our library to. It isn't fair to the kid or the poor librarian, who feels somewhat responsible for the child. During the school year the library offers and expects a certain number of kids to hang out at the library between the end of the school day and 5 or 6pm. Their is even a sign-up sheet for this service giving the librarian emergency phone numbers and such. The idea is great for a few hours after school. But all day everyday during the summer is ridiculous. There are too many other alternatives, especially if you can afford them.

No, I would never ever drop my children off and leave them! My kids are young now, but can't imagine doing it! You would be surprised just how irresponsible some parents are! I'm a teacher, and I have seen it all!
