We had a family cat. My Mom had gone through several smaller contained animals and decided that for how short they live and how much work they are anyway, we may as well have something more interactive.
In our family, I got a dog for my oldest for her 8th birthday because my youngest was potty trained and I did not intend to have more kids.
He was a terrier mix
His name was Bear
I grew up in a very large family - our family lived on a farm an was apart of animal rescues an stuff like that........I was 10 when we got 2 giant birds(a Scarlett Macaw,an Umbrella Cockatoo) we ended up getting to keep them an they became mine.........they were so funny .......the cockatoo would run something across the bars an the Macaw would say I told you to shut the hell up..............ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
