What time should I be putting my kids to bed?

They are 5 & 6. We wake up at 7am so they can be at school by 8:20am. I am the first to admit I've been keeping them up much too late on school nights, partially because I work full time and feel like I hardly get to see them.

If you have children this age or have had children this age what bedtime schedule worked best for you?

We do 8, but the older kids (ages 7 and 9) can stay up until 8:30 if they want and read.

Children that age are supposed to get 10-12 hours of sleep. I have one child that needs the full twelve and one of my others, who is 4 years younger, that sometimes gets just shy of the 10 hour mark. She has just never been a big sleeper. But rule of thumb is 10-12.

Getting up at 7 ... I would say in bed by 830 & asleep by 9. My kids get up at 6 and go to bed at 10. But they are teens so 8 hours is good

My older 2 are 7&9 and they go to bed at 8:30 or 9p depending on the night, on the weekends they stay up until 930 or sometimes even 10p if it's a holiday or something special.  In the summer it's light out really late, so they go to bed 930ish usually.  They have to be up at 730a to get to school on time.  I think it really depends on your kids.  If they're dragging around in the morning you probably should get them to bed earlier.  My 4 and 2 year olds go to bed at 9p, but they get a nap and they don't have to get up as early for school.

We are very involved in sports, both theirs and mine. We don't usually finish dinner and baths until 9:00-9:30 so it's about 9:30-10:00 before they are in bed.

My 7 yr old is in bed, lights out, by 8pm most nights. We all wake at 615 am. On fri and sat she stays up later or has a movie in bed. My 11 yr old is in bed by 9pm, same wake time. My hubby doesn't get to spend tons of time during the week with them do to work and other schedules but if they don't get proper rest, the school work suffers and so does their attitudes and behavior. What has to be done is what is done. It's better for them to be well rested and ready to go.
