I suppose they wouldn't want to give up their maiden name but also want to be known as their husband's wife so they think it's easier to hyphenate.

Maybe so one of their names is the same last name as their kids? I thought about hyphenating but my maiden name was 11 letters long and DH's last name is 10 letters long so it would've been a crazy long mouthful! So I just sucked it up and changed my last name.

I really don't know. I took my husband's last name.

I have a coworker that didn't change her last name when she got married. I suppose they will hyphenate their kids last names if they have them.

Some do it for professional reasons. Some do it because they want to hold on to their name, as well as take their husband's name.

The only time it makes sense to me is for professional reasons. I know a lot of Dr's don't change their names.

My brother and his wife both hyphenated their last names. In CA,both or either one can change their last name. You can even make a new last name combining the last or middle names of either person. You list on marriage cert what name you will go by once married
