I only worked retail once. It was at Toys R Us during the holiday season about six years ago. I really enjoyed it!

Having to cheerfully greet every person who walked through the doors and less than half of them acknowledge you.

I worked in retail after high school.  I was an assistant department manager in a store like Target.  I didn't mind the job, but the pay sucked and the customers could be a pain at times.

Not for a LONG LONG time.  I honestly can't remember anything I liked about it.  It is THE worst type of job, IMO.  The hours are awful, you have to deal with idiot's all day, having to stand in one stop your WHOLE shift (depending on what kind of position you have), and you typically aren't paid enough.

I've worked in a department store, an outdoor specialty type store and retail pharmacy. Retail really is not my favorite type of work, bitchy customers and working weekends and holidays were the worst parts of the job. Good or regular customers were the best part of the job.

I worked retail in my mid 20s.  I worked at Kmart for about 4 years.  I worked at the customer service desk and manning the self-checkouts.  I HATED self-check outs, especially when our managers stopped having early morning cashiers until 9 a.m.

I had one old man get so mad at having to use the self-check outs, he threw what he had in his hands at me.  Luckily, they were paper towels and not cans.  I called security and had him escorted out.  I was 7 1/2 months pregnant (and it was very obvious I was pregnant.)  I was sooo mad about it.  I was normally very calm and  collected, I never lost my cool, even when dealing with people who would cuss me out for not accepting a return.  But being 7 1/2 months pregnant (and just finding out there might be problems with my unborn son,) my temper got the best of me.  I told him off.  I didn't cuss or touch him.  The old man tried to tell my manager that I cussed at him and should be fired.  My manager told him to leave the store and not come back.  I had been working there for 3 years and was an excellent employee versus a cranky old man who had been rude to employees before.

My favorite part was my camaderie with my fellow co-workers.  Most of our managers were awesome.  I baby-sat part-time for one of my managers, when she had to go in to work early or if she had a date.  Most of my co-workers were pretty easy to get along with and although there was the occasional argument or disagreement, they worked it out.

I wouldn't go back to work in retail though.  With kids and family obligations/schedules, the constant changes of scheduling would be too much for our family.

I worked at SAMs Club for about a year and a half. I liked the physical work, I worked in the grocery and produce depts, but a lot of times dealing with customers was awful. The customer is not always right! They can be real assholes! And I cannot stand the stupid moral boosting chants and meetings we had to have every freaking morning.
