mjimaging - please help me with a photo question!

I'm trying to play with my camera more and more. I have a Canon Rebel T2i. Every time I try to take a good picture, I end up focusing on the background and the subject is fuzzy. Today while taking pictures of DH's family playing softball it happened again. I caught a really cute picture of his niece but she's all blurry and I'm sad that I can't fix it.

Help!

There are different focusing points. They are boxes and if you hold your shoot button halfway a box will focus and light up. That's the box that is focusing. You can pick where you want to focus instead of letting the camera pick. That may just solve your problem.

This is what I'm dealing with. Everthing is focused except what I want to focus on. The trees and shrubs are perfect but my subject is blurry. This is my MIL playing softball, lol. Excuse her face, I'm just trying to show you my struggles, haha!
